Visited Surya mandir in Jan 2006 after more than 10 years. So glad I had my camera with me. Day was simply beautiful and so is the place.

Some pictures showing artwork and details on temple.
The Sun God on his seven horsed chariot. Lord Vishnu The base of the temple consists of some 7 to 8 layers. The top most is elephant layer - also known as gaja-star in Hindi - is the one seen here. Another idol of Lord Vishnu - here with Sheshnaag and Chakra in his hand. The roof as seen from inside of the first temple. The roof of second temple - you can see some bats resting in there! |

The temple has two parts, the front and back. Here in this photo, you can distinguish between the two.

Entire Ramayan and Mahabharat stories are carved on these walls and inside of the temple. This two-faced artwork is called keechak - they are designed to help support the temple structure. |

Surroundings around the temple.
Lawn and little bushes in front yard of temple. A couple sitting in shade. Some trees in front yard of the temple. A girl was flying a kite outside of temple area. A pond outside of temple area. Driving back from Surya mandir... cows crossing the road. |

Awesome pics Chitz, gives a good feel for the scale and the intricate work. Like Vivek(D) I wonder how come I haven't been there either? Must make it a point this visit. And to think my dad was involved there for a while too!!! (We get too engrossed in our own lives ) Have you seen the step well at .... ummmm I'll be forgetting my name next ?
