I doubt if I'd heard this song before I obtained the DVD. Doesn't seem familiar, and it's always a delight to find a "good old song".

A song requested by Divyanjali in the Mukesh (?) forum:
Laali Laali .. Asha Bhonsle aur Sakhiyan - Teesri Kasam - Shailendra - SJ
Not sure if it's complete, though, just 2:10
Cheers,

Abhay,
Interesting that you choose to refer to Begum Akhtar as Akhtaribai Faizabadi instead of her more popular name. Any particular reason ?

Personal idiosyncracy! smile1.gif I find myself referring to her as AF when talking about her pre-1950 singing and as BA when talking about her work thereafter. The two styles are so distinct from each other!

Warm regards,

Just the kind of input that makes this forum so valuable to lovers of old HFM. Now we just have to find a recording of the original by Begum Akhtar!
*

Thank you for the kind words! Info about the Begum is available on tap. smile1.gif

I have a digitised copy of Akhtaribai's rendition. Will upload it tomorrow (Tuesday). The original is a 78 rpm recording; the upload will thus be qualified with the "compromising quality for the sake of nostalgia" tag so dear to HMV!

Warm regards,
Abhay

Also I think comparisons of Ashaji's version to the original are inherently unfair. Ashaji is quite clearly mimicing the begum in her singing and has probably been asked to do so by MM. So you cannot look for intensity in the performance. Aise hi ek ghazal "kisi ke waadon pe kyun aitbaar" appears in "the burning train" soundtrack (R.D.Burman-Sahir-1980). Ashaji sounds just like Parveen Sultana in the album!! If ever proof was needed for her versatility, it is songs like these.

My attempt was not to run down Asha by comparing her rendition to Akhtaribai's - I was rather commending the fact that Asha comes out so well in the comparison.

Disclaimer: I am a card-carrying member of BA's fan club! smile1.gif

Warm regards,
Abhay

I've included the minute-long 'dramatic" music preceding the song:

Although the first few frames didn't copy/convert well, I couldn't resist uploading this video-clip in Real Media with one of my favourite songs of Asha-ji, picturized on my favourite actress, Waheeda Rehman:
