As promised on the Asha forum
(ref http://www.hamaraforums.com/index.php?showtopic=2157&st=900# ),
am uploading Akhtaribai Faizabadi's rendition of "vafaaon ke badale jafaa kar rahe hain". The original is a 78 rpm recording by Megaphone released in the 1930s; this file has been digitised from a cassette version that Megaphone brought out a few years ago.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Abhay,

Thanks much for a great ul. I agree that the original has a certain endearing rawness that a sanitized film version can never duplicate. clap1.gif

The cassette is titled "Gazals of Begum Akhtar" and consists of the following 78 rpm recordings originally released in the late 1930s:

- diwaanaa banaanaa hai to
- vo aa rahe hain jo beemaar ki davaa ke liye (written by BA herself)
- zabaan-e-ashk se haal-e-dil-e-deewaanaa kahate hain
- toone but-e-harajaai kaisi ye adaa paaee
- le gayaa josh-e-junoon
- sayyaad ne qafas mein karane na di fugaan tak
- wafaaon ke badale jafaa kar rahe hain
- hamako nazar se apani giraaye huye to hain (written by BA herself)
- khoon-e-dil kaa jo kuchh ashkon mein pataa milataa hai
- Khudaa ki shaan hai ham yoon jalaaye jaate hain
- maze betaabiyon ke aa rahe hain
- wafaa nahiin na sahii kam se kam jafaa kar le

There is also a companion cassette titled "Geets, Gazals, Thumris - Begum Akhtar" that also has some great recordings. If you are interested, will post that list too.

Warm regards,
Abhay

Thanks. Please do list the companion cassette too. I understand Megaphone
had also issued a CD of her 30s/40s songs. If you have it kindly take the
trouble of listing that one also.
I am particulary interested in these recordings:
1. na aate hamen is men takraar kyaa thii
2. main vo bad-naseeb huun be-vatan
3. kaash itanaa mere naalon men asar ho jaaye

Will duly list the tracks on the other cassette. No idea about the CD. I am afraid none of the ghazals you mention are featured in any of BA's LP/cassette/CD releases (I have almost all of them and know the contents of the ones that I don't have).

Have heard Farida Khanum's (great) rendition of the first ghazal you mention. Can't wait now to hear Akhtaribai's version. If these three were released on 78 rpms, they should be available with some collector somewhere - must hunt for them.

Warm regards,
Abhay
