Thanks to RTP ...i started this thread. I came to know that most often, many melodies of yesteryears had this prop......Chandamama. Every poet down the lane used these metaphors to express some of the finest expressions...be it romance or love between siblings....be it bantering or hankering..or plain complaining. Starting this thread with an immortal song ....love between siblings couldnt be expressed any better !

Dear SF,

Is this the Telugu version of Paasa Malar?
The tune is very familiar.
It is quite possible, since in those days most successful Telugu films were made into Tamil & vice-versa.
I shall be obliged for a confirmation.

Best Regards,
suresh
sangeetbhakt
Yup it is the Telugu equivalent of Paasamalar. And yes this song is the
equivalent of "Malarndhu malaraadha paadhi malar pola" sung in Tamil by
P Susheela and TMS.
Interesting to hear it in Ghantasala's voice.

Yes, as Sangeet said, the film was made in telugu as well as Tamil..as usual. One of the finest songs of Ghantasala and Suseela, both were just great in this song...on screen NTR and Savitri did the honors.. smile.gif

Yes...i felt the same when i heard in the voice of TMS.. we literally grew up with this song.. smile.gif

Here is one more gem of a song...from Gundamma katha. This was made into tamil too... Manithan Maravillai, but the tamil version bombed at the Box office. The telugu film ofcourse, went on to become one of the biggest hits of Vijaya films..every song is a pleasure to hear in this film.

Dear SF,
Sorry to disappoint.
Despite all the brainstorming, I am not able to answer the question.

I heard the song - very soothing; felt in my bones that there exists a Tamil cousin, but could not put my finger on that.

The nearest I got to was - THANGAMALAI RAHASIYAM (1957). Incidentally, it also has a famous moon song - 'AMUDHAI POZHIYUM NILVAE' - sung so beautifully by P Suseela.

However, there is a Tamil film called ADIMAI PENN (meaning Slave Girl, starring MGR & Jayalalitha) 1969, the same year of GR's vintage. I have read somewhere that it is the first Tamil film in which SP Bala sang a song in Tamil - a duet with P Suseela.

That song also alludes to the moon - Aayiram Nilave vaa'

Thought that this can be an interesting tid-bit in this thread, which, I think, is getting all the right attention, with Swarapriya graciously adding to the contributions.

A pointer to a great thread in the days to come.

Though I cannot contribute due to language barriers (but certainly not musical barrier, for good music transcends languages; incidentally, I am presently listening to some Lebanese music). I will certainly be watching from the sidelines and adding the odd two-pence, once in a while.

Best wishes,
Suresh

Suresh,
SPB's first song in Tamil - the duet with P Susheela is from the film "Shanthi nilayam" which starred
Gemini Ganeshan and Kanchana. The lyrics are "Iyarkai enum iLaya kani". Exceptional music by
M S Vishwanathan in this film.
I believe "Aaayiram nilave vaa" was SPB's first big hit.
There was an unreleased film called "Hotel Rambha" where SPB sang a duet with L R Eswari.
THe lyrics are "AthhaanOdu ippadi irundhu eththanai naaLaachu". I don't have the song. Would love
to get a hold of it.

Dear SB,

Thanks for the correction.
Now I recollect that song from Shant Nilayam; it had excellent music.
I am equally curious to know the answer to the question of SF. I am unable to solve it.
Perhaps, you may have some info.
