I have listened to this song hundreds of times, but this word struck me today.

The song is "Mose chanchal jawani sambhali nahin jaaye" from the film Bahu Beti (1952). Composed by Pandit S D Batish sahab and penned by Kaifi Azmi sahab, this is wonderful song.

What is the meaning of the word "Painge"? It comes at around 2:02 min in this song.

The line in the song is :

Koi painge padhaye

Thanks

Hi
In the song 'Painge badhaaye' means swaying of swing closer to the singer i. e. actress. (Punjabi:Peengh de hulaarey). Harjinder

Thanks for the clarification of this term. I have never heard this phrase in any other Hindi film song so far.

Many punjabi words found their way into Hindi songs in those days and still do.

I am unable to quote all the songs immediately, but I have heard this word in several hindi films songs of the 'sawan ke jhoole' type. The most recent usage I can think of was in Ghanan Ghanan from Lagaan

"pedon par jhoole daalo or oonchi peng badhao..."

Also, this word is found in many dialects of North India. It is also found in braj bhasha/ avadhi and is used widely in UP.

You are a great resource of information. Obviously my knowledge of Hindi film songs or of the various dialects of Hindi is very limited. That is why I said that I have not heard songs containing that word.

Initially I had thought it was "Painge padhaye" (means teaching something). Now I know it is "Painge badhaye" (means increasing the swing of the swing).

Thanks

Thanks HB, yes you are right. As I said, I did not know the word at all.

Now I think of it the same song has reference to the swing twice:

1) Koi painge badhaye
2) koi majboot baahon mein jhoola jhulaye

Thanks.
I wonder if Painge is really a Punjabi word. Got it
searched but did not find it in a Punjabi dictionary.
Just IMHO... Geeta might have misprounced Peenge.n
as Painge.
maheshks
In punjabi is it pronounced as "peeng" while in hindi it is "paing".

Pronunciation is correct.
