Listening to a relatively rare number from Nirmal (1952) composed by Bulo C Rani.

Thee aur woh mulaqaat woh...

This is a simple sweet song where the girl is remembering her meeting with her lover.

Hum tumhaare saath ho, tum hamaare saath ho
haathon mein haath ho, kuchh aankhon se baat ho..

ho re..

Wow what a sweet rendition! Without going overboard, Geeta ji and BCR conveys the right mood of the song.

Here is the song:

One must listen to this beauty to appreciate how she conveys the romantic feelings without expressing them!

I was listening to this sweet song some day and realized some specials from the SDB-GR team. The film Armaan was released in the year 1953, so this song was possibly recorded some time in the year 1952 when Geeta ji was still young Geeta Roy. She was singing:

Yeh Hansi, Yeh Khushi, Laakhon Baras Yoon Hi Aaye
Yeh Hansi, Yeh Khushi, Laakhon Baras Yoon Hi Aaye..

Naujawaani Teri Geet Gaati Rahe, Zindagi Naaz Se Muskuraati Rahe
Naujawaani Teri Geet Gaati Rahe, Zindagi Naaz Se Muskuraati Rahe
Dum-B-Dum Roop Ki Dhoop Chadti Rahe, Har Ada Teri Jaadu Jagaati Rahe

And after this line she sings "Yeh tera...baankpan..sab ke dilon mein samaaye". The way she takes a lovely pause after the word "Yeh tera" and "Baankpan" is a treat to the ears.

Wish the lines she sung in this song would have become true in her life and brought the smiles and happiness for thousands of years for her!

An unusual song from the pen of Kavi Pradeep ji.

"Hallo hallo oh meri chhammak chhallo,
aao aao karle pyar challo challo"

A fun-filled duet of Rafi sahab and Geeta ji from the film School Master (1959) composed by Vasant Desai.

Listen to the way Geeta ji sings:

Na na na na darr lage mohe dear..
koi dekh lega jee tallo tallo

Simply superb!
parag_sankla
It did not matter who the composer was or who she sang for. It did not matter if it was a big budget film or a low budget costume drama. Geeta ji sang every song with the passion and that special Geeta Dutt touch. Right from her early years, she was extremely good at conveying the right emotions of the song.

We will continue to explore more of such gems...

Another example of a lesser heard song. After Burmanda and Lata ji had some misunderstanding, Burmanda started giving most of the songs to Asha ji. For the film Laajwanti, all the songs filmed on Nargis were sung by Asha ji.

Geeta ji gets a chorus dance song : Aaja chhaye kaare badara, chham chham barase nain kajara re
The song is filmed on 2 dancers and Geeta ji sings for both of them.

The way she conveys the feelings of this song is simply superb!

parag_sankla
Those who know me or have observed my posts, I generally avoid talking about the songs Geeta ji has sung for Guru Dutt films. Not that I do not like them, but many times those are the only ones talked about. So I make it a point to focus the attention on her songs outside Guru Dutt films domain.

This time, for a change, I am referring to a melancholy from Guru Dutt's superhit film Aarpaar (1954). Composed by O P Nayyar and penned by Majrooh sahab, this song is filmed on Shyaama.

Ja ja ja ja bewafaa
kaisa pyar kaisi preet re
tu naa kisi ka meet re
jhoothi tere pyaar ki kasam...

As most of us know, this song is a tandem of the more popular duet "Sun sun zaalima" sung by Rafi sahab and Geeta ji. I have read somewhere that the tune of the duet is heavily influenced by some popular western song. But the same article mentions that the sad song "Ja ja ja ja bewafaa" is an original masterpiece from OPN.

The same singer who sang "Arre na na na na tauba tauba" for the same film Aarpaar was singing this sweet and melodious sad song. I get goose bumps when I listen to the way she sings the opening lines.

Generally the words in OPN's songs have a heavier stress, but this song has like a few words lightly whispered..

A beauty of a song!

Another excellent example of Bhaav Gayaki is the songs Geeta ji has sung for the film Jogan. Some one has said that if Saint Meerabai was to come back to life, she would have taken her "Avtaar" as young Geeta Roy.

All the songs have been sung with such feel.

The bhajans are always talked about more. Here is a relatively light song : Jaraa tham jaa tu

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8LxzEbj83o

The sweetness in Geeta's voice and the smile on Nargis's face is like just made for each other!

What a melody..thanks Bulo C Rani for giving these gems to us.

The magic of Bhaav Gayaki is not restricted to film songs alone. Here is an excellent example of a non-film song composed by V Balsara.

A must listen for music lovers. Just close your eyes and you can imagine Geeta ji literally swinging on this tune. The composer has made excellent use of the chorus voices.

Thanks for your comments. I believe you liked the non-film song "Gaayein gaayein". I too loved it when I heard it for the first time. Another strong which made an instant appeal was "Yeh hawa yeh fiza, yeh baharein, hum yahan tum wahan dil pukaare"

What a beauty!

A popular song "Aye dil mujhe bataa de" from the film Bhai Bhai is also an excellent example of "Bhaav Gayaki" by Geeta ji. A song filmed on the "vamp" Shyama which the composer (Madan Mohan sahab) composed only on insistence of the film makers has been made so lively and appealing by Geeta ji. The feelings of these songs (lyrics by Rajinder Krishan sahab) are so effectively conveyed by Geeta ji.

parag_sankla
"Bachapan ke din bhi kya din the, udate firate titali ban" what a simple way of expressing the feelings of remembering the childhood. Majrooh sahab penned this song for the film Sujata and was composed by S D Burman sahab. The song was filmed on Shashikala. Asha ji simply did humming for Nutan.

Simply out of the world experience! Any one can co-related his/her childhood memories with this song...

Here is another beautiful song, a duet with A R Oza, for the film Nanand Bhaujai (1949). The song was composed by Bulo C Rani. The lyirics are by Indra Chandra. Now I have also seen listings for lyricist name as Pandit Indra too. So are these 2 names of the same person? Not sure.

Enjoy the beautiful song:

Tum kehate rahe hum sunate rahe..

When it comes to philosophical and/or meaningful songs, Geeta ji is at her emotive best. Burmanda's Mashal (1950) had just one number by the young Geeta Roy. The more famous one "Upar gagal vishal" was sung by Manna Dey ji. Geeta ji excels in echoing the sentiments of Kavi Pradeep ji

Kitani sach hain yeh baat re
koi maane ya na maane
kis ki kismat mein kya likha
duniya mein koi na jaane

An unusual song, sung at the end of her career, for a not so famous composer and penned by an unknown lyricist, that too when the singer was practically written off ..what is the song I am talking about?

"Koi chupke se aake, sapne sulake mujhko jagaake bole..."

what a song !

Really beautiful song. Excellent bhaav geet by Geeta Dutt ( though I am not an expert, song seems to be based on Bageswari raag).

Yes Rajan its an exquisitely melodious song. I am not sure about the Raag. Knowledgeable experts can confirm it.

Thanks to HF we are able to listen to such gems...

Another magic of Geeta ji's singing was the effortlessness with which she used to express the feelings of a song.

Take a popular song "Jaane kya tune kahi" from the film Pyaasa. Its a simple tune yet sung so effectively. The way her voice whirls with that magical Geeta touch is simply amazing.

I was going through some blogs on the internet and found this one.

http://musicblogsindia.com/2009/07/jaane-k...ne-kahi-pyaasa/

The author of the blog has a decent voice and she sings songs as a tribute to the legends. Even though she has tried her best, it is but obvious that she has not been able to match the magic of the song as compared to the original song sung by Geeta ji.

The idea behind this post is not to criticize the blogger, but to highlight that many of Geeta ji's songs which we think are so simple are actually pretty difficult to sing. And conveying the right emotions through them..that is the magic of the legend, which even no other established singer could match.

I have heard this tribute from Alka Yagnik where she mentions : "Till date many singers tried to copy/adopt Geeta ji's style, but no one could come close!"
