Yes, Robeson was a forerunner not only to black actors but also to political figures like Martin Luther King, Jesse Jackson, even Barack Obama. I can't recall if it was Dr.King who said that he could fight his fight because of Robeson....a brilliant student, all star athlete, great actor and superb singer, he is best remembered for his wonderful songs in Show Boat (1936). A wonderful movie with great songs like Ol' Man River (the Sinatra version is crap!), I Still Suits Me and Can't Help Lovin Dat Man.....Show Boat (1936) is a pathbreaking musical. Do watch it and then see the shameful Ava Gardner remake just to know why remakes are never a good idea....

Ace director is indeed the correct term for William Wyler. Its mind-boggling how many good films he made. He also invented deep-focus photography, used so well in Citizen Kane, and taught Laurence Olivier and Bette Davis (whose lover he was for a period), film acting. Here are just some of the many classics he directed. Just look at the range of genres and themes covered....

Wuthering Heights (1939) - Emily Bronte romance novel set in England
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - post WWII rehabilitation in the US
The Big Country (1958) - revisionist western
Ben-Hur (1959) - Roman epic
The Collector (1965) - horror

Faraaj..No doubt about it. Cant imagine his range in today's world. One of my most favorites..
