Here one pair who are noted not just for their Onscreen chemistry..

SF

Tracy-Hepburn will always remain the greatest screen pairing ever. No female actor has won or been nominated for as many Oscars as Hepburn and Tracy was the first male to win 2 Best Actor Oscars. Only Jack Nicholson has bested him.

Their off-screen chemistry was the subject of a superb biography by a former friend and collaborator, Garson Kanin (he wrote several screenplays including Adam's Rib and Woman of the Year). Their off-screen romance is actually a great tragedy. Spencer Tracy had a deaf son and that was the only reason he never got divorced to marry Hepburn.

What's next???

Umm....only 80% sure...but he looks a lot like Howard Keel - one of the finest musical stars of the golden era. I loved his performance in Kiss Me Kate and the Cole Porter songs from that film were beautiful. He had a wonderful deep voice and tongue in cheek humour (in the roles he portrayed).....

Faraaj..that is brilliant. you are indeed correct. I loved him in " seven brides for the seven boys" which was made into Satte pe Satta... Amazing film with the rousing...Raise the Barn dance sequence.. smile.gif

They call me Mr.Tibbs!!!

When Denzel Washington received his Best Actor oscar for Training Day, he gave a beautiful speech. Poitier won a Lifetime Achievement award the same year. Denzel paid tribute to Poitier by saying that I spend my whole life trying to achieve his record and what do you go and do, you give him another oscar! There's nothing I want more than to follow in his footsteps. Poitier stood up and blew Denzel a kiss for this gesture....

I've only seen him as Marty DiBergi in the riotously funny This is Spinal Tap and perhaps some small walk-on roles in other films he directed like When Harry Met Sally so not completely familiar with the face. You said easy one! Fierstein is a known stage name but he has very few film credits (and mostly bit roles)....I was really scratching my head on the Fiddler hint because the two famous Tevye's are Zero Mostel and Topol.....anyways, it is a great film nonetheless.....the last of the great musicals....

Gene Wilder. His breakthrough film would be The Producers (1969) with him and Zero Mostel (the original Tevye in Fiddler on the Roof). Mostel delivers one of the classic insults of cinema history to Wilder - "You fish-faced enemy of the people".

We seem to have reached a stalemate so let me introduce him.

The top photo was indeed a Shakespearan portrayal (of Hamlet from 1922). The actor - John Barrymore - was arguably the finest actor and certainly the greatest romantic lead of the 1920s and early 30s. He was also extraordinarily handsome and was labelled "The Profile". In any case, I'm tremendously impressed by him based on the handful of films I've seen.

Acting was actually in his blood and both his brother and sister Lionel and Ethel were famous character actors. I'm sure you've seen films in which they appeared.

Unfortunately Barrymore's downfall came about due to his love of drink. This genetic curse was inherited by both his son and daughter, as described in the daughter's book Too Much, Too Soon. His granddaughter, Drew Barrymore, too suffered drug and alcoholism problems at a young age.

Too Much, Too Soon was made into quite a good film with Barrymore portrayed by close real-life friend and admirer Errol Flynn. When Barrymore died, all his friends including Flynn attended the funeral. After the mourners dispersed, some common Barrymore-Flynn drinking buddies pulled a stunt that is part of Hollywood legend. One of them delayed Flynn going home while the others dug up Barrymore's body and took his corpse to Flynn's place. When Flynn came home, he turned on the lights of his living room and saw his recently departed friend sitting on the sofa with a drink in his hand. He nearly suffered a heart attack!
simplefable
Faraaj...it is a pleasure to read your comments / remarks. smile.gif
I did hear about John Barrymore..but havent seen any of his films..am afraid. I never know that Drew is his grand daughter..yes, as you said, many of the stars went out like shooting stars..due to addictions. btw..the episode of Erol Flynn is absolutely terrifying.. laugh.gif

Here is one sizzling star, am sure that you can identify her too..

It was a Billy Wilder film. glare.gif And what a performance by Dietrich too!

Laughton directed only one film, The Night of the Hunter(1955), starring Robert Mitchum, Shelley Winters and the great Lillian Gish. It is considered a masterpiece.

I am teetering on the edge of recognizing this face. Tomorrow...

Edward Fox is a recognisable character actor from the 70s-80s. Most indians would recognise him from Gandhi and perhaps as M in the best Bond film - Never Say Never Again.

May I recommend an extraordinary film he had a small role in: The Duellists (1977). This is director Ridley Scott's first feature-length film, made on a shoe-string budget and far better than the mega-budget films he now makes. A fascinating period piece, beautifully shot in crumbling castles all over Europe, this is as atmospheric as Scott's more acclaimed Blade Runner and Alien (both classics by the way). The effort of tracking down this lost classic is well worth it!
Faraaj73
This actress - one of my favourites - is not going to be easy to identify! So, a few hints are probably necessary:

1- She has worked in english language and european language films.
2- Married to a very famous director (her 2nd marriage).
3- Star of perhaps the finest film on the subject of religion - she played the title character.

Bravo!!!

She's one of my 4-5 favourite actresses so good to see someone else recognise her. Her performance in Babette's Feast was brilliant. She was also great in her husband's film Le Boucher. Definitely watch it if you can.....I don't like Bunuel (except Los Olvidados)...

If you come to Australia, I can show The Duellists to you in an excellent print! And cook you a nice meal too laugh.gif

To be honest, I didn't like Day of the Jackal because I felt it fell too far short of the book. There are some films and directors e.g. Lubitsch, that are widely admired but I just never warmed to them....but Day of the Jackal is considered a classic as obviously are Lubitsch films.

I love Hollywood musicals, and of course Gene Kelly (this pic must be circa 45-47) was one of the greats with classics like Anchors Aweigh, An American in Paris and Singin in the Rain (Good mornin' was a classic song!). But I liked one of his few non-singing performances - Inherit the Wind. He had to rub elbows with double oscar winners Spencer Tracy and Frederic March in a court-room classic about the Scopes trial (aka monkey trial). Tracy and March played real life legendary lawyers Clarence Darrow and William Jennings Bryant, while Gene was an ultra-cynical journalist. Another really special film....there are so many!!!!!!!!

Who's the guy? Its a pic from possibly my all-time favourite film....shouldn't be at all difficult to identify.

mmuk2004
Ah! Mine too! But then I have so many favorites biggrin.gif Fred Mac Murray, who was habitually cast as the "good guy" gave a great performance as the morally ambiguous Walter Neff, the insurance agent, who is talked into an insurance fraud scheme that involves a murder, in this all time great noir, Double Indemnity. Wilder gave him another great role in The Apartment, sixteen years later, again a negative one, and Mac Murray once again shone in that role. Pity he did not often get meaty roles such as these.

p.s. Don't miss B Stanwyck in that blonde wig tongue1.gif

When Billy Wilder and William Wyler were coming out from Lubitsch's funeral, Wilder said, "No more Lubitsch" to which Wyler answered, "Worse, no more Lubitsch films". sad1.gif

Identify the actress:

Catherine Deneuve
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg - French musical tragedy with no dialogue, everything was sung.
Belle de Jour - Bored housewife leads a double life as a prostitute when her husband is away at work. This film was scandalous for its time.
Repulsion - Her best film (and performance) and one of Polanski's best. This is an amazing take on sexual repression and madness.

Madhavi

I could be wrong the pic is a bit misty with the glass and raindrops. But definitely the pic you've u/l'ed has a much more mature Deneuve - post Belle de Jour, pre Indochine.....mid 70s perhaps....lets wait for Madhavi to clear the mystery.....

An actor who debuted (as a film actor) in another of my favourite films....he stole the show in a great ensemble cast.....his performance is the stuff dreams are made of!
