Those who know Nirupa Roy as the famous mother in the film "Deewar" would probably not know some facts about her. That Geeta Roy sang dozens of songs for Nirupa Roy in the forties and early fifties would probably come as a surprise to many.

Born as Kokila Kishorechandra Balsara in Valsad, Gujrat, young Kokila married a man named Kamal Roy at a young age and migrated to Bombay (now Mumbai) for acting in Films. Very soon she became the "Goddess" of Hindi Films. She went on to act in many movies, initially as the leading lady then in various roles of a variety of Hindu Goddesses, so much so that people actually lined up to seek her blessings.

Young Geeta Roy sang many songs filmed on Nirupa Roy and this young singer had almost achieved a status of "Audio Goddess".

Coming soon on this thread are

1) List of films for which Geeta Roy gave her voice to Nirupa Roy
2) An association of these two young girls for Hindi as well as Gujrati films
3) A look at some prominent songs Geeta Roy sang for Nirupa Roy including the superhit songs for the film "Har har mahadev"
4) Last but not the least, the role of composer Avinash Vyas in this musical association

Looking at the above list, the notable films for which Geeta ji sang for Nirupa Roy seem to be : Nanand Bhojai, Gunsundari, Mangalphera (both in Hindi and Gujrati for all these films), Hamari Manzil, Har Har Mahadev, Gada No Bel (Gujrati) and Nag Mani.

As one can see, majority of these films music is composed by the veteran composer Avinash Vyas.
parag_sankla
In one of the earliest films Nanand Bhojai (1948) starring Nirupa Roy, Geeta ji sang 4 solos and 2 duets with A R Oza. The music was composed by Bulo C Rani and the lyrics were by Indra Chandra

Ae jee meri nanadi hui jawaan - Geeta Dutt
Bana dulhan ka vesh chali pritam ke desh - Geeta Dutt
Gaaun main dil ka taraana - Geeta Dutt
Ek Gagan panth ka pakheroo duniya mein - Geeta Dutt
Tum kehte rahe ham sunate rahe - Geeta Dutt , A R Oza
Zindagi hai dillagi dillagi hai zindagi - Geeta Dutt , A R Oza

Similarly, I believe, Geeta ji must have sung the same songs in the Gujrati version of the same film. 2 songs from this Gujrati film have been previously shared on HF

1) Ek Gagan panth no pakheroo - Geeta Dutt (The same tune as "Ek Gagan panth ka pakheroo duniya mein")
2) Achko Machko Kareli - Geeta Dutt
3) Saji sola sinagar - Geeta Dutt (The same tune as "Bana dulhan ka vesh chali pritam ke desh")

The song 3 has been posted in CDQ here

An interesting write-up on Nirupa Roy ji

http://www.rediff.com/entertai/2004/oct/15spec1.htm

The announcement of Nirupa Roy's death severs one of our last remaining links to the Golden Age Of Bollywood.

For many, Nirupa Roy was almost a generic term for 'screen mother.' This was after she played superstar Amitabh Bachchan's mother in a string of 1970s blockbusters. As the damp-eyed, long-suffering matriarch, she pulled at the heartstrings of a nation. A skilled actress, Nirupa would lay bare the emotional bruises that came with being the highly-moral centre of the hero's often sinister world.

But there was much more to Nirupa Roy than being a mother specialist who could unerringly locate the poignancy inside the sturdiest commercial film stereotype.

In a career that spanned half a century from 1946 to 1999, Nirupa has also done over a hundred films as a heroine.
The trajectory of her career saw her march through several genres of filmmaking -- from playing the goddess to performing dramatic roles in social films to even dabbling in off-beat cinema. Nirupa may have never been the glamour queen but this emotional performer's work was informed with an obvious love for her art and a mastery over its craft.

Her beginnings, though, couldn't have been further removed from films.

Born Kokila Bulsara in the south Gujarat town of Valsad, she had never seen a movie till she came to Mumbai as a 15-year-old bride.

When her husband and she answered an advertisement for actors in a Gujarati paper, she was the one from the couple who got chosen. Her husband magnanimously supported her and she made her debut in the Gujarati film, Ranakdevi (1946).

By the next year, she was doing small roles in Hindi films as well, often at Ranjit studios. The Gujarati-Hindi bilingual, Gunsundari (1948), made by a Ranjit affiliation, was Nirupa Roy's career-making film, in which she played a housewife who wins back her husband.

Nirupa was tagged the queen of the mythological films after she played Parvati to Trilok Kapoor's Shiv in Jayant Desai's immensely popular Har Har Mahadev (1950). Consequently, she became extremely busy over the next few years -- doing 16 films with Trilok Kapoor alone, and playing a variety of goddesses. So overpowering was her pious screen image that people would regularly come to her home, fall at her feet and ask for her blessings.

When Bimal Roy chose her to play Balraj Sahni's wife in Do Bigha Zameen (1953), Nirupa grabbed the chance to do something off-beat. She willingly wore unwashed clothes that had been bought from Bombay's Chor Bazaar. And having come from a village helped her mannerisms. As the beset-by-troubles bucolic housewife who makes a perilous solo journey to Kolkata, Nirupa was highly convincing with the sheer force of her emotions. Her performance was in keeping with the sentimental idiom of the day, albeit with a dash of realism.

This led to Nirupa doing several realist films in the mid 1950s, often alongside Sahni, like Amar Kumar's Garam Coat, Hemen Gupta's Taksaal and Krishen Chopra's adaptation of Premchand's Heera Moti. In Tangawali, also opposite Sahni, she had a Mother India kind of role, alongside truant son Shammi Kapoor.

While the maturity in Nirupa's face helped her win strong characters as opposed to purely ornamental ones, it also pushed her into character roles far too early. In Bhai Bhai (1956), she was the homely wife of Ashok Kumar while Shyama played the seductive temptress who leads him astray. In Munimji (1955), she played Dev Anand's mother though she was much younger to him. As consolation, she bagged Filmfare's Best Supporting Actress for the film.

Nirupa continued to prolifically play the heroine throughout the decade, though many of her films were low budget affairs. Her best phase came in the latter half of the 1950s when the devotional film Janam Janam Ke Phere (its song Zara saamne toh aao chhaliye topped the Binaca Geetmala countdown for that year) and the historical Amarsingh Rathod did well.

This led to better roles opposite heroes like Ashok Kumar in heroine oriented, glycerin-heavy films like Bedard Zamana Kya Jaane and a memorable trilogy opposite Bharat Bhushan -- Samrat Chandragupta, Rani Rupmati and Kavi Kalidas -- the last two directed by S N Tripathi had cinematic merit and unforgettable music.

With the advent of the 1960s, the heroine roles dwindled and Nirupa got slotted as the mother, especially after playing Asha Parekh's estranged mother in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's 1961 film, Chhaya (and winning another Filmfare award).

Other memorable roles in the decade include Mujhe Jeene Do (1963), in which she played a dignified matron whose husband is shot dead by a dacoit but who finds the humanity within herself to give shelter to the dacoit's wife and child when they are in trouble in the climax. In Shaheed (1966), she essayed another dignified character who helps a patriot escape while in Ram Aur Shyam (1967) she played Dilip Kumar's harassed sister who is browbeaten by Pran.

The crowning glory in Nirupa Roy's life however came in the 1970s when Vyjayanthimala turned down the chance to make a comeback with Yash Chopra's Deewar (1975). The author-backed role of a mother grappling with her son's (Amitabh Bachchan)'s transgressions and her own love for him came to Nirupa and she made it unquestionably her own. As the moral pivot of the film, Nirupa's role was far superior to that of the heroines, Parveen Babi and Neetu Singh. Projecting the straight-backed mother in the famous 'Mere paas maa hai' dialogue with perfection, Deewar ensured Nirupa Roy's place in movie history.

Deewar was followed by several Amitabh blockbusters where she played the mother -- Amar Akbar Anthony, Muqaddar Ka Sikander, Suhaag, Mard.

Having played Dharmendra's mother, she also played Sunny's mother in Betaab. But there was only so much variation that writers could bring to the role of a mother. She cut down on her work by the end of the 1980s and worked only intermittently in the 1990s.

Best friends with actress Shyama who lived a few buildings away, Nirupa retreated to a comfortable retirement. But she could not resist returning to the studios and evoking memories of another era when she played Amitabh's mother one last time in Lal Badshah (1999). After all, after 50 years and 250 films, she had devoted a large part of her life to her profession.

Article on the magical trio of composer Avinash Vyas, actress Nirupa Roy and singer Geeta Roy posted on our blog section here

http://www.geetadutt.com/blog/?p=629

Avinash Vyas is one of the most famous composers in Gujarat. Nirupa Roy, born as Kokila Kishorechandra Balsara is a famous actress. Geeta Dutt (nee Roy) is a legendary playback singer famous for her “Bhaav Gayaki”. These three great artists came together for some wonderful collaborations in Hindi and Gujrati film music.

On our website, we already have a detailed discussion about the songs of Geeta Dutt composed by maestro Avinash Vyas here. We have also briefly talked about “Gujarat’s unlikely love affair with Geeta’s voice” on our website here. The fact that she has sung more songs in Gujrati (close to a hundred) than her mother tongue Bengali (close to 75 odd) is itself a great indication of her affection for the fondly Gujrat.

Avinash Vyas had the unique combination of being a poet and composer. His music and poetry ranged from a variety of geet, bhajan, ghazals, raas, garba, gujarati folk songs. He touched hearts of millions with the simplicity of his words and tunes that were a reflection of the present social-cultural and religious milieu. He also wrote ballet’s and plays (music and dance form). Some of the most popular ones were Dadi Maa Ni Dikari and Putaliwaalo (for Children).

As per an article by Shri Harish Raghuvanshi published in Dainik Bhaksar in 2008 (Gujarati), Avinash Vyas learnt Hindustani classical music from Ustad Allauddin Khan in 1940 after moving to Mumbai. After this training, he worked with HMV and Young India Recording Company as a player. It was during this time that his friendship blossomed with Ustad Allah Rakha (also known as A R Qureshi). National Gramophone Company released his first song in 1940. There after his compositions started getting aired on All India Radio. He was made the President of the Music Department at Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan by Shri K.M.Munshi.

One will be actually surprised to know that Avinash Vyas’s music career actually began with Hindi films, the first film being Mahasati Anasuya (1943) which starred Durgha Khote, Shobhana Samarth and Shahu Modak. In this film, music was composed jointly by Ustad Allah Rakha. However, initially, Avinash Vyas did experience his share of trouble and struggle as his music did not get as successful or popular. In 1948, he composed the music for Ratibhai Panatar’s Gunasundari. This film was the stepping stone of his popularity and fame.

It is right from his first Gujrati film, the musical association began with the new and fresh voice of young Geeta Roy. Incidentally, Nirupa Roy was the leading actress of this film and Geeta Roy sang several songs for this film. A fact which can not be overlooked at this point in time is that Geeta did not know any language other than her mother tongue Bengali at this juncture. She used to write the songs in Bengali script in her diary. In spite of this limitation, she was singing songs in Hindi, Urdu, Khadi boli, Braj and Gujrati effortlessly. This special talent and genius of Geeta Roy is often overlooked by the music lover community.

Coming back to the maestro Avinash Vyas. He composed approximately 1200 odd Gujarati songs for close to 190 films. Most of these songs were also penned by him. Additionally, he composed 500 odd compositions for 60 odd Hindi films. His first popular Gujarati film Gunasundari had Nirupa Roy in the leading role. Interestingly, among all of the Hindi Films that he composed music for, Nirupa Roy acted in 15 or so of these films. Those who know Nirupa Roy as the famous mother in the film “Deewar” would probably not know some facts about her. That Geeta Roy sang several dozens of songs for Nirupa Roy in the forties and early fifties would probably come as a surprise to many.

Here is a list of films for which Geeta would have sung for Nirupa Roy (since videos of many movies are not available, it is not certain if a song sung by Geeta for these films was indeed filmed on Nirupa Roy or not)

Gunsundari (1948) – Gujrati and Hindi versions
Nanand Bhojai (1948) – Gujrati and Hindi versions

Apart from Gujarati films, Nirupa acted in many Hindi films, initially as a leading lady and then moved on to take on a variety of roles. One such role was that of the Hindu Goddesses. Tagged as the “Queen of mythological films”, it is said that people actually would line up to take her blessings. Young Geeta Roy sang many songs filmed on Nirupa Roy and this young singer had almost achieved a status of “Audio Goddess”. The film Har Har Mahadev (1950) starring Nirupa Roy and Trilok Kapoor with music by Avinash Vyas and as many as seven songs by Geeta Roy must be the most successful film by this team.

This is a divine bhajan sung by Geeta Roy and Badrinath Vyas for this film. Was the male singer related to the composer?

A classical case of a sweet and soft romantic number in a mythological film. The song “Rum jhum rum jhum chali jaaon main” is a sublime experience in its sweet composition, simplicity in words and effortless singing. In fact these qualities more or less summarize the careers of the composer and the singer here!

The icing on the cake is of course the famous song “Gun gun gun gun gunjan karta bhanwra, tum kaun sandesaa laaye”. The effect of humming of a bee is so well crafted by Geeta in her tender and sweet voice that is truly captivates the heart of the listener.

Coming back to the Gujrati films, the songs of Mangal Phera (1949) can be considered the “Creme de la creme” from this team of composer, singer and actress. Here are two songs that Geetaji sang for Avinash Vyas for the film Mangal Phera. Raakh na ramakda (khilone maati ka, toys of ashes…) sung along with A R Oza. It is said that V Shantaram’s eyes were filled with tears on hearing the song! The second song – a garba – Taliyon na taale. Two totally contrasting songs, and yet so wonderfully rendered. One an immortal “bhajan” Rakh na ramakda is a song that speaks of life and death, human existence, and of human frailty. The other is a fun filled song.

English transliteration:

Toys of ashes….
the creator sent mortals to play on earth
Made from mud, they were named human beings

New games played everyday
Abusing one another, quarreling over worldly possessions
and over ‘yours’ and ‘mine’
The human body coloured with Maya (attachments)

The worldly life has just begun….even before life flourishes,
it is snuffed away by the storm

The circle of life and death never ends,
The games remain incomplete
Matters of body and soul end the way they start

The other song Taliyona Tale has a magical quality to it. A song that is sung during festivities and gaieties, inimitable Geeta Dutt does justice so beautifully in emoting the playfulness, fun and frolic, transporting the listener to another realm where one can actually experience the gently flowing winds and the full moon night, with the ladies dancing away to the tunes of music.

English transliteration:

On this full moon night,
fair ladies are dancing to the tune and rhythm of their clapping hands,
their sky blue lehariya odhni flowing…this full moon night

The moon beautiful and bright,
My beloved draws me towards him
It seems as if this night is disclosing the secrets of my heart….this full moon night

Come closer O fair lady
The moon oscillates your heart strings
The heart gently swaying in beautiful full moon night…

Dance away, beautiful ladies
It seems as if Lord Krishna himself is dancing
On the banks of the river Yamuna this full moon night….
