P.Bhanumati was one of the greatest singing stars of Tamil films, in the '40s and '50s. Her forays into Hindi cinema were few, but are well-remembered, in ventures such as 'Mangala' and 'Nishan' - AVM productions, needless to say. For a star who knew no Hindi, her singing, even in Hindi cinema, was remarkably mature, as is apparent from this balmy blend with the satin-soft Talat Mahmood, under the Dravidinan C.R.Subbaraman-Viswanathan baton, in the 1953 'Chandirani':

Hari ji,

Late great Bhanumati was actually a Telugu star. She acted only in few Tamil and some Hindi movies but she was a Telugu film legend. Besides being an actress, she had her own studio where with her husband made many movies. "Chandirani" was made under her own banner. She has a double role in the movie. Besides acting in it, she also wrote its story, screenplay, sang her own songs, and directed it.

Later in her life she got into writing short stories in Telugu. Sshe published these stories in local magazines. She was a great humorist and got her doctorate in Telugu literature many years after being in movies and a star for a long time. Her thesis was how she interacted with her mother-in-law, a series of short stories she wrote that were very very funny.

Both "Mangala" and "Nishan" were dubbed from original Tamil versions. I am not certain about "Mangala" but I believe "Nishan" was made by Gemini Studios who also made the famous "Chandralekha".

Cheers,
Swarapriya
