Am enjoying your wonderful uploads one by one. For such a lovely song, rendered so beautifully by Rafi, one was afraid the Joy Mukherjee would spoil it. Surprisingly he does not, he sings it with a quiet dignity and a sensitivity that is not unpleasing. Mala Sinha is adequate when she has to look sad but the lines where Sahir suggests the suppressed desires of the woman, one does wish she would not chew her lips with quite such emphasis or wrap her pallu around her head so coyly. The visuals fill one with nostalgia, fans in a hall and a poet-hero... wonder where they have gone. Bahu Beti released in 1965 is one of the few movies that dealt with the issue of widow remarriage (Joy M is a poet who falls in love with a widow, Mala S who is supported by her enlightened FIL, Ashok K). Sahir words, as usual, rise beyond the shackles of the plot and characters of hindi films suggesting with sensitivity the poet's perception of, and his empathy with the woman's desires behind her quiet facade.
Sirf hamse nahin khudse bhi khafa lagti ho
Zulf lehraye to aanchal mein mein chupa leti ho
Hont tharraye to daanton mein daba leti ho
Jo kabhi khul ke na barse wo ghata lagti ho
Sirf hamse nahin khud se bhi khafa lagti ho
Jagi jagi nazar aati ho na soyi soyi
Tum jo ho apne khayalaat mein khoyi khoyi
Kisi mayoos mussavur ki dua lagti ho
Sirf hamse nahin khudse bhi khafa ...
