Prince I was waiting in case anyone else wanted to have a go:

The poet is comparing the beauty of his beloved using several metaphors. He compares it with other things in nature, the moon, the flowers, the night etc. He says he’s searched everywhere and has asked everyone if they have seen anyone as beautiful as his beloved and they all have said no

I think it might sound a bit funny when translated, but anyway here goes


Maine Poocha Chand Se Ke Dekha Hai Kahin, Mera Yaar Sa Haseen
I asked the moon whether it has seen anyone as beautiful as my beloved

Chand Ne Kaha Chandni Ki Kasam, Nahi Nahi Nahi
The moon said ‘I swear by my light no,no,no’ (chandni is moonlight it’s often referred to by poets as the beloved of the moon)

Maine Yeh Hijaab Tera Dhoondha
I searched for your modesty

Har Jageh Shabab Tera Dhoondha
I searched for your beauty everywhere

Kaliyon Se Misaal Teri Poochi
I asked the flower buds if they have ever come across anything similar (misaal – example)

Phoolon mein Jawaab Tera Dhoondha
searched amongst the flowers to see if there was one as beautiful as you

Maine Poocha Baag Se Falak Ho Ya Zameen, Aisa Phool Hai Kahin
I asked the garden ‘whether its sky or earth is there a flower as beautiful as you ?’

Baag Ne Kaha Har Kali Ki Kasam, Nahi Nahi Nahi
The garden replied ‘I swear by the flower buds no, no, no (as the flower buds belong to the garden – it will never lie swearing by them)

Ho, Chaal Hai Ke Mauj Ki Ravaani
when you walk it’s like a wave in the sea

Zulf Hai Ke Raat Ki Kahani
you hair is like the beauty of the night

Hont Hain Ke Aaine Kawal Ke
your lips are like petals ( aaine is mirror, kawal is lotus –same (as kamal I guess) )

Aankh Hai Ke Mahkadon Ki Rani
You eyes are intoxicated ( mahkadon – is bars where people go to drink)

I asked the wine glass ‘whether its sky or earth, is there any other wine like you? ’ (as intoxicating as you)

The wine glass replied I swear by the wine no,no,no

Khoobsurati Jo Tu Ne Paayi

Lut Gayi Khuda Ki Bas Khudaayi

The beauty you possess must have left god bankrupt (as he has given you all the beauty there must be none left in his treasure to give to anyone else)

Meer Ke Ghazal Kahun Tujhe Main
Shall I call you a gahazal written by mir

Ya Kahun Khaiyyaam Ki Rubaayi
or shall I call you rabbia composed by khaiyyam

Main Jo Poochun Shayaron Se Aisa Dil Nashi, Koi Sher Hai Kahin
I asked the poets if they know of any poem which is as lovely as you

The poets swore by their work and said no,no,no

JAM - wine glass
KALI - flower bud
Mehkadi - is drinking ( is their an equivalent word in english for this)
