(Dev) Maya (1961)

There are nine beautiful songs in this film that cast a spell on you. Each one of them is that good. The songs from this are definitely as charming as Dev’s debonair mannerisms.

The film has that perennial pleaser, the duet by Lata and Rafi Saab, "Tasveer Teri Dil Mein". One of my favorite songs of Lata, "Jaa Re" is from this film. There are three solos by Rafi Saab, two of which are Rafi Saab's distinctively great songs. There are also a couple of duets of Lata and Dwijen Mukherjee (one of them is almost a solo) that are lovely to listen to. Dwijen has an impeccable resemblance to Hemantda's voice. For a minute I thought I was actually listening to Hemantda. I was that easily fooled. I don't know too much about this singer. May be some of our members can shed some light on him.

I will upload these melodious songs in back-to-back three posts. The first post and parts of the second post contain all songs from the film, from an original soundtrack album. The second post also contains several music clips. The third post contains several instrumentals.

Let Salilda do his wizardry starting with these songs in the first post...

(Dilip) Mashaal (1984)

There were several firsts of this Yash Chopra produced and directed film. Chopraji was working with Dilip Saab for the first time. This was the first film of Javed Akhtar after his break with Salim for which he wrote the story and provided the screenplay. Incidentally, Yashji gave Akhtar Saab first break as a lyricist for his earlier film "Silsila (1981)". Also, this was the first time Hridyanath Mangeshkarji composed music for a Yash Chopra film. These and other tidbits like these Chopraji revealed in an interview with Karan Johar that is given in the second post.

Here are the songs from this film from an original soundtrack album...

I am uploading below an interview with Yash Chopra by Karan Johar on the making of "Mashaal (1984)". Because of the length of this interview, I split it into three parts. Downloading any one or two parts will not do. To access the full interview, please upload all of the three parts.

Here is the interview...

(Dev) Hum Dono (1961)

Jaidevji gave beautiful music to many films. Yet he is remembered best for the outstanding music he composed for this film. Songs of "Hum Dono" are further enriched because of the great lyrics written by inimitable Sahir Saab.

This film with the screenplay and dialogues by Vijay Anand was directed by one of Dev's close friends Amarjeet. Amarjeet was a publicist for Dev who also made "Teen Deviyan" and "Gambler". This is one of the hallmarks of Dev's character, helping his friends when needed. He gave break to Guru Dutt. He helped Raj Khosla by requesting Guru to take him under his wings. He gave a chance to his younger brother Vijay who turned out to be one of our fine directors. Dev also introduced or helped careers of many other actors, Tina Munim, Zeenat Aman, and Jackie Shroff, to name a few.

I am uploading the songs from this film and several specials in three back-to-back posts. The first post contains songs from an original soundtrack album. The second post contains several specials including commentaries. The third post contains some instrumentals.

A colorized version of "Hum Dono" was released in 2011 as "Hum Dono Rangeen". But the movie went unnoticed.

Here are the songs in the first post from this outstanding album...

Jaidev had not been at very good terms with Lata when word leaked out that Jaidev was planning to offer "Allah Tero Naam" to M S Subbalaxmi. When Lata heard of this, she, in her own charming way dissuaded Jaidev from calling M S S. She reportedly said something of why go outside of the "Family" when a "nacheez" like Lata was available. The greats like Lata had to be brilliant at their profession but they also had the sixth sense of preventing disaster. Who knows what would have happened if MSS has started in Hindi movies!

Nandi, thanks for the note.

MSS was a towering legend. She didn't need to sing in Hindi films to prove her prowess. She left enough of her work for generations to enjoy. There was nobody like her before, or since then. A great singing genius.

Cheers,
S

(Kishore) Ganga ki Lahren (1964)

The following write up appeared in one of my earlier postings of this album...

Savithri was one of the greatest actresses of Telugu cinema, if not of our times. If she were a Hindi actress, she would be right up there with Meena Kumari and Nargis. During 50’s and 60’s she was the reigning queen of both Telugu and Tamil films. She had the top billing in most of the movies. Her presence generally guaranteed success.

Savithri started as a bit star in Telugu films like “Samsaaram” and “Patala Bhairavi”. When the producers gambled to take her to play Parvati in the classic “Devadasu (1953)” in Telugu opposite Akkineni Nageshwara Rao (ANR), many felt it was foolhardy. But when the film was released she received rave reviews for her performance matching ANR scene for scene and the movie enjoyed unprecedented success. There was no turning back for Savithri after this.

“Devadasu” was also made and released in Tamil with the same pair at the same time and was also a resounding hit. This made Savithri a sought after star in Tamil as well. She continued to act in both languages and had a string of major hits to her credit. She ventured into Hindi movies when S.S. Vasan offered her a supporting role in “Bahut Din Huye” in 1954 with Madhubala in the lead. Subsequently she also appeared in “Ghar Basake Dekho (1963)” with Manoj Kumar, “Ganga Ki Lahren (1964)” with Dharmendra, and “Balram Shri Krishna (1968)” in which Prithviraj Kapoor was one of the stars.

Savithri’s crowning achievement as an actress came with the film “Chivaraku Migiledi (1960)”. She received the National Award for Best Actress for her brilliant and memorable performance in that film. This was a remake of the Bengali movie starring Suchitra Sen. It was later remade into Hindi with Waheeda as “Khamoshi (1969)”.

Savithri was married to the Tamil actor Gemini Ganeshan, father of actress Rekha. Ganeshan already had several wives. The less I say about this better. Later on they got separated. The depression of the separation was devastating to Savithri. Her life took for a sorry turn and in the end when she passed away at the young age of 44 she was broke and helpless and very heartbroken.

How come all these brilliant actors seem to leave us so young leaving us to reminisce the rich legacy they left with us? It seems like the fate plays such a cruel joke with their personal lives. They seem to be on the top of the world giving so much pleasure with their many memorable performances in the films they act in and yet they are not able to manage their own personal lives. A real pity.

There is a web site dedicated to Savithri, who acted in nearly 250 movies, mostly in Tamil and Telugu. The URL for this web site is:

http://www.savithri.info

I am uploading these songs in two back-to-back posts. All songs are from an original soundtrack album except for one. The exception is the song “Ek Paise Ka Hai Sawaal”. This was contributed by one of our fellow members, Aditya Pant. Thanks for sharing this with us Aditya.

Here are the songs in the first post…

(Dev) Roop Ki Rani Choron Ka Raja (1961)

The songs from this film became a huge hit. However the movie didn't. I am uploading these songs in three back-to-back posts. The first two contain songs from the film. The third has some of the extended versions.

Please note that the quality of these songs is variable from fair to good. I am uploading poorer quality songs in a lower bit rate.

Also, Lata's version of "Tum Toh Dil Ki" is usually published as a solo in various CD collections. However, this is essentially the same as the duet version with Talat's humming that precedes and trails the song removed. Incidentally, I am including the duet version from the film also here.

Here are the songs in the first post...
