After suffering consecutive setbacks with most of his movies failing to perform at the box-office, Dilipji took a sabbatical from acting for nearly five years. After this period, Dilipji was back with a smash in this film made by Bharat Manoj Kumar. Songs from this album were uploaded recently in the "Saat Saath" thread in this directory. (Kishore) Naughty Boy (1962)

Shakti Samanta, later of “Aradhana (1969)” and other movies fame, produced and directed this slapstick comedy. The only thing worth remembering about this film is its music. As always, the great Burmanda is on mark again. Almost every song is fun to listen to. He was ably assisted by his son RD for this film. The film credits only Asha and Kishoreda as the playback singers. But there is a duet in the film, “Ho Gayi Shaam”, that was sung by Asha and Mannada. Interestingly, Manna was singing here for Kishoreda in the film. It wasn’t any typical Mannada song and could have easily handled by Kishoreda. Yet for some curious reason Burmanda had Manna sing it.

The movie’s heroine was Kalpana (Mohan) who made her debut with Shammi Kapoor in the hit comedy “Professor” which also came the same year as “Naughty Boy”. She acted only in five or six films. One of the notable of these was with Dev Anand in “Teen Deviyan (1965)”. Her last film appearance was in the film “Nawab Sirajuddaula”. That came in 1967 the year she got married. Immediately after the marriage she quit acting. However, the marriage didn't last long as she divorced her husband. After that she lived alone with her daughter. She passed away earlier this year at the age of 65 with complication arising from cancer.

(Dev) Manzil (1960)

Here is another classic album from the combination of ever so dependable Burmanda working with Majrooh Saab and Dev Saab. This combination always proved to be a winner. This time it is no different. Each and every song from the film was a huge hit even though movie itself was only a modest success. There are so many melodious songs that it becomes a real task to single out any one as a favorite. Even though I cherish to listen to all these songs over and over again, my heart goes to Hemantda's touching solo, "Yaad Aa Gayi". With so much melancholy in his voice, with such touching lyrics, the song stirs up disquieting memories. Love you Hemantda...

Here is an observation. If you listen closely to the duet "Dil Toh Hai Deewaana Na" you will find the music around the 2 minute mark similar to the other song "Deewaana Mastaana" from the film with the same combination of Dev-Burmanda-Majrooh that came also in 1960, "Bombai ka Babu".

(Dilip) Shakti (1982)

This movie brought together for the first and the last time two giants of the Hindi cinema, Dilip Saab and Amitabh. Both were excellent in their respective roles yet Dilipji walked away with the Filmfare Best Actor Award. One of the main reasons is probably Amitabh was playing the same role he played in several other movies for an umpteenth time it seems like.

There are several good songs in this film composed by RD. My favorite is Lataji's "Hum Ne Sanam Ko". Here is this and the rest of the songs from this fine album...

(Kishore) Rungoli (1962)

The same team that gave us that endearing hit "New Delhi" in 1956 decided to revive similar magic and came up with this movie. This movie also had similar formula; unforgettable music by S&J, great performances by the principals, some dazzling dances by Vyjayanti, and slapstick comedy by Kishoreda. Yet the movie didn't have either the soul or the heart of the old movie that was warmly touching to the senses. In essence it lacked what "Delhi" had, the story of national integration that was behind all the comedy that clicked in that movie.

Like mentioned earlier, the music by S&J is the real treat of this movie. Their creative juices flowing still high, this incredible pair never slacked and gave us one memorable hit after another. These songs have stood the test of times. What more proof we need than that even after 50 years of their original release, these songs continue to give the same pleasurable goose bumps.

(Dev) Sarhad (1960)

This is the second film this year the very beautiful and talented Suchitra Sen was paired with Dev. The other one was "Bombai Ka Babu". C. Ramchandra was at the helm of the music of "Sarhad". Most of the tunes in this album, by Ramchandra's own acknowledgement, were inspired by some popular Western tunes.

(Dilip) Vidhaata (1982)

This was the first of the three movies Subhash Ghai directed the great thespian Dilip Saab. The other two were "Karma (1986)" and "Saudagar (1991)". This film has a huge cast and the movie was a hit thanks to some great performances by the principals.

(Kishore) Ek Raaz (1963)

This Shakti Samanta directed film had a simple tale that is infused with unforgettable songs. The movie was fun to watch mainly because it takes you back when things were so simple in our lives. Also for a change performance of Kishoreda was restrained without much of his usual slapstick comedy. However, as mentioned, the real highlight of the film is its music. Chitraguptji's music was simply superb. Almost all songs are excellent.

It is hard to pick a favorite from such a melodious album. But I have not one but two favorites, both solos by Kishoreda, the engrossing "Agar Sunn Le" and the endearing "Paayalwaali Dekhna".

(Dev) Hum Dono (1961)

Jaidevji gave beautiful music to many films. Yet he is remembered best for the outstanding music he composed for this film. Songs of "Hum Dono" are further enriched because of the great lyrics written by inimitable Sahir Saab.

This film with the screenplay and dialogues by Vijay Anand was directed by one of Dev's close friends Amarjeet. Amarjeet was a publicist for Dev who also made "Teen Deviyan" and "Gambler". This is one of the hallmarks of Dev's character, helping his friends when needed. He gave break to Guru Dutt. He helped Raj Khosla by requesting Guru to take him under his wings. He gave a chance to his younger brother Vijay who turned out to be one of our fine directors. Dev also introduced or helped careers of many other actors, Tina Munim, Zeenat Aman, and Jackie Shroff, to name a few.
