(Rekha) Vijeta (1982)
The actor Shashi Kapoor after turning a producer made several good movies in the beginning. These include “Junoon” in 1978 and “Kalyug” in 1981. Both of these were directed by the great Shyam Benegal. Govind Nihalani, who was the cinematographer for these two films, directed this third film for Shashi, “Vijeta”. Nihalani’s film “Akrosh” in 1980 is considered a classic in Hindi cinema. After directing “Vijeta”, he followed with another great film, “Ardha Satya” in 1983. “Vijeta”, almost documentary in nature, was shot entirely with the help of Indian Air Force. Shashi’s son, Kunal, was the lead character in the film. The film won critical acclaim and bagged several technical Filmfare Awards. But to me, the most distinguishing feature of the film was its beautiful music. Ajit Varman composed three songs for the film and had an oppertunity to come up with a great background score as the subject matter dictated it. Varmanji rose to the occasion and does an astonishingly admirable job. My favorite of the album is the duet by Asha and Deshpande, “Mann Anand Anand Chhaayo”. A beautiful composition with both singers doing a wonderful job. An unforgettable melodic piece. This one is closely followed by Parveen Sultana’s solo. I am uploading the songs and music clips in two back-to-back posts. The first post contains the songs from the film. The second post contains several backround music clips. Here are the melodies from the first post… This post has been edited by swarapriya: Feb 26 2012, 02:22 PM Attached image(s) |

(Mumtaz) Aandhiyan (1989)
Mumtaz did not act in films for nearly 12 years after her last one “Aaina” with Rajesh Khanna released in 1977 flopped. She returned to movies in 1989 to appear in this film. In between that time she got married and settled down. This movie was inspired by the story of Shakuntala and Dushyant (the same names were used by the principles in the film) from the epic Mahabharat. It has several good tracks by Bappi Lahiri and was directed by David Dhawan. But this movie also flopped. In spite of several offers to act in other films after this one, Mumtaz decided to call it quits for good. This is the last film of Mumtaz in this thread we will be covering. We started this thread about Mumtaz films in June of 2009. In nearly 33 months we covered almost all of her movies, about 110 of them in total. It was very much fun for me doing this thread to see how an actress who got very few breaks for a number of years and appeared in any movie she could act however small the role was, persevere with great determination to finally succeed and reach the top. There are several good songs in this album by Bappida. My favorite song is the beautiful solo by Kumar Sanu, "Phir Dil Ne Woh Chot Khaayi". A nice composition that has rich lyrics and was sung with deep pathos by Sanu. I am uploading songs from this album in two back-to-back posts. Here is the first set of songs… Attached image(s) |
