Thanks Laxmi for these lovely tandem songs. They are among my favorites. If I remember correctly I must have heard a duet too. Is that so? I have not seen the movie but think that this must so. Is it so and if so do you happen to have it?

Binod.

No mention please Binod. I haven't heard a duet. I saw the movie in 1964. I don't remember much. I don't think there is a duet song by rafi and lata.

I too don't recollect hearing a duet version of this song. I think, this movie was made during the period when Rafi and Lata were not singing together.
I haven't been able to find the complete song of the Lata version; it is supposed to have one more stanza:

kaun aaegaa idhar, kisaki raah dekhen ham
jinki aahaTen suni, jaane kiske ye kadam
apnaa koyi bhi nahin, apne to hain raam

If any one has this full song, please upload.

Hi Laxmi & Hari Ram:

I have uploaded a duet of the above song in OurHFM since the song is at 192 kbps and clearly exceeds the upper threshold of 160 kbps as laid down in the rules of Hamara Forum. The male voice is definitely Rafi and the female voice sounds more like Lata than Suman to me. Please go over there, get a feel of the song, and give me your response to my assessment. Thanks.

Binod.

Binod ji,

I saw the movie, many years ago. I only have very vague memory of the movie.

I listened to your song. In some songs Suman sounds so much like Lata; its hard to make out. I am no expert; I can't tell if it's Suman or Lata's voice. I only know that there was a period in early 60s, when Rafi and Lata didn't sing together.

Interestingly, your audio contains the missing last stanza.

rafi:
aaj kal me.n Dhal gayaa, din huaa tamaam
tuu bhii so jaa, so ga_ii, ra.ng bharii shaam
female:
aaj kal me.n Dhal gayaa, din huaa tamaam
tuu bhii so jaa, so ga_ii, ra.ng bharii shaam
aaj kal me.n Dhal gayaa

rafi:
(so gayaa chaman chaman, so ga_ii kalii\-kalii
so gae hai.n sab nagar, so ga_ii galii\-galii)\- 2
nii.nd kah rahii hai chal, merii baa.Nh thaam,
tuu bhii so jaa, so ga_ii, ra.ng bharii shaam
aaj kal me.n Dhal gayaa

female:
(hai bujhaa\-bujhaa saa dil, bojh saa.Ns\-saa.Ns par
jii rahe hai.n phir bhii ham, sirf kal kii aas par)\- 2
kah rahii hai chaa.Ndanii, leke teraa naam,
tuu bhii so jaa, so ga_ii, ra.ng bharii shaam
aaj kal me.n Dhal gayaa

rafi:
(kaun aaegaa idhar, kisakii raah dekhe.n ham
jinakii aahaTe.n sunii, jaane kisake ye kadam)\- 2
apanaa koii bhii nahii.n, apane hai.n to raam,
female:
tuu bhii so jaa, so ga_ii, ra.ng bharii shaam
aaj kal me.n Dhal gayaa, din huaa tamaam

Thanks for bringing this third version of the song. Did all three versions appear in the movie?

Hari Ram

Binod,

I agree with Hari Ram. I don't remember the duet in the movie. Saw this movie 42 years back. Thank you very much for the lovely and rare duet. The quality is excellent. But for you, I wouldn't known that the duet existed.

Hari Ram:

I have tried to u/l through PM but get the following message"

The error returned was:
Sorry, the server is too busy to handle your request, please try again in a moment.

Must be the effect of the ratio rule against which I had warned a long time back. Rules need to be practical in order to be effective. It is again rules which are forcing me to PM the song to you. Will try again later on.

Binod ji,
I got curious, after I heard the duet version you sent.
I searched for information about this song on Google. This is what I found.

Originally the song was recorded as two solos, one by Rafi and another by Lata. The record companies distributed these two solos.
It seems, the movie had a solo version sung by Lata and a duet version by Rafi and Lata.
The duet version for the movie was created by combining two solos.
Binod ji, you are absolutely correct about this duet song, made from two recording.
Thank you very much for enlightening us with this song.

Brother:

I have no idea since I have not seen the movie. I doubt the technology was so good to splice and edit that way in the early sixties. Furthermore, it would defeat the very purpose of the almighty Lata which was to boycott Rafi and teach him a lesson at the least and finish his singing career off at the most. She would have put her foot down and the SJ duo would not have the guts to confront her ire.

My conjecture is that the songs of this film were recorded prior to Lata's embargo on Rafi. She must have had the duet removed later on before it was released. The way the song's sounds abruptly end gives one the impression that it was unprofessionally done which suggests that it was obtained from the movie by an amateur enthusiast. I could be wrong as I do not know the original source. The original person who recorded or ripped the song must know it if that person can ever be traced.

Trying in vain to be a Sherlock Holms my dear Watson.

Binod.
