Arre ye lo, BC, aap kyun khafa hote ho... tongue1.gif

I too had the same version as SF so did not upload.

Have been intending to write on GB for a long time. A very strange career, in his long career he has written a mere 240 songs. He was closely associated with RDB, hence seen as part of the "modern" gang, hence not much is thought of his lyrics dry.gif . He writes incredibly intimate, passionate lyrics, even in some of the fast paced RDB tracks which do not ostensibly seem to require them, but benefit tremendously from them. And one tends to forget that he has been writing for a long time, here is a favorite song that was a very early association of Kalyanji-Anandji and Gulshan Bawra, the beautiful Lata Hemant duet from Satta Bazaar:

Satta Bazaar-1959

Tumhein Yaad Hoga, Kabhi Hum Mile The
Mohabbat ki Raahon Mein Mil Ke Chale The...
Bhula do Mohabbat Mein Hum Tum Mile The
Sapna Hi Samjho Ke Mil Ke Chale The

Dooba Hun Gham Ki Gehrayiyon Mein
Sahara Hai Yaadon Ka Tanhaiyon Mein(2)
Bhula do mohabbat...
Kahin aur dil ki duniya basa lo
kasam hai tumhen wo kasam tod daalo(2)
Tumhein yaad hoga...

Nayee dil ki duniya basa na sakunga
Jo bhoole ho tum wo bhula na sakunga(2)
Bhula do...
Agar zingadi ho apne hi bas mein
Tumhari kasam hum na bhulen wo kasmen(2)
Tumhein yaad hoga...

That was G Bawra's first hit song. Gulshan Bawra had to struggle through the sixties to get himself to be taken seriously, till the Upkaar break that he got, once again under Kalyanji Anandji's baton. But this time he is being passionate about his country....here is one of the most popular patriotic songs promoting the kisan as the hero, echoing the jai jawan jai kisan sentiments popularized by Shashtri in 1965 and very adroitly exploited by our very own Bharat Kumar tongue1.gif

Upkaar(1967)

Mere Desh Ki Dharti Sona Ugle
Ugle Heere Moti mere desh ki dharti...

Bailon ke gale mein jab ghungroo
Jeevan ka raag sunate hain
Gham koson door ho jata hai
Khushiyon ke kawal muskate hain
Sunke jahat ki awaazein
Yun lage kahin shehnai baje
Aate hi mast baharon ke
Dulhan ki tarah har khet saje

Jab chalte hai is dharti pe hal
Mamta angdayiyan leti hain
Kyun na pooje is mati ko
Jo jeevan ka sukh deti hai
Is dharti pe jisne janam liya(2)
Usne hi paya pyar tera
Yahan apna paraya koi nahin
Hai sab pe Maa upkaar tera
Mere desh ki dharti...

Ye bagh hai Gautam Nanak ka
Khilte aman ke phool yahan
Gandhi Subash Tagore Tilak
Aise hain chaman ke phool yahan
Rang hara Hari Singh Nalve se
Rang lal hai Lal Bahadur se
Rang bana basanti Baghat Singh
Rang aman Kabir Jawahar se...

Here are some excerpts from an interview where Bawra recalls those early days of struggle:

"Dharmendra, Manoj Kumar, Prakash Mehra, Satyen Chowdhary and I were co-strugglers. We would visit producers' offices and in the night hit out for the country liquor bar in Yari Road, miss the last bus and then walk back all the way," he recalls bemusedly.

Dharmendra would wait for his money- order from home and the day he received it, "would guzzle 20 glasses of sweet-lime juice at Andheri station."

And here's his comment on the "Desh Ki Dharti" song:

"As the goods clerk, I would marvel at the sacks and sacks of golden wheat that came in from Punjab, inspired by the bounty of the land I wrote an ode to it - 'Mere desh ki dharti sona ugle ugle heere moti' then. Years later when Manoj had become a hero and I recited these lines to him, he just leapt for joy and said he would use them in his film Upkaar," Bawra relates.

Parag,

According to the write-up on GB in hindilyrics.com ( http://www.hindilyrix.com/lyricists/lyrici...shan-bawra.html ), Kalyanji Virji (then composing as a single composer) gave him his first break in Chandrasena(1959). The song was "Main Kya Janu Kahan Lage Ye Sawan Matwala Re" that was sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

I have had the pleasure of meeting GB.

Gulshan Bawra - whose name is actually Gulsham Kumar Mehra is amonst the unsung lyricts of HFM but that fact that he has penned about 250 songs songs in a career spanning for more than 4 decades is a testimony of the quality factor of his songs.

It is hard to find one meaningless song penned by him. The song Mere Desh ki Dharti is amonsgt his best. His first song was sung by Lata ji and he is a great fan and friendof Rafisaab.

My favorite songs penned by him are from filsm like Upkaar, Haath Ki safai, Zanjeer and Adalat. He has worked mostly with KA and RDB.

He has also given special and guest appearances in films.

I have some wonderful information about Gulshan and Rafisaab during the recording of the song in Zanjer. Happy to share if you guys are interested. biggrin.gif

Cheers

This is more or less how the incident goes.

It was the month of Ramadan and Rafisaab was fasting when he was called by KA to record the duet "dewane hein dewano ko".

Gulshan ji was also present at the recording. Lata ji kept on asking retakes as she was not happy with her delivery of the song. Rafisaab said to KA that he has getting tired and had enough and left the studio a bit upset.

Gulshan ji ran after Rafisaab to console him and said "Rafisaab this song is presented on me on the screen".

Rafisaab stopped and smiled and said "pehle kyun nahi bataya ke gana aap par hein"

Rafisaab went back to the studio and had one more recording and this time Lataji was satisfied with her song delivery.

Gulshan ji says Rafisaab sang the song beautifully on all the previous attempts but in the final recording he sang the song for me and on the screen it looked as if I am singing.

Thank you SSji for this personal, interesting anecdote. I enjoy reading about these as they bring the personalities that we admire for their talent, alive. Like, for example, Dharmendra guzzling 20 glasses of nimbu pani as a struggling star, after getting his money-order from home tongue1.gif

Gulshan Bawra acted in a number of films to keep the afloat in the sixties. And before he hit the gold mine again with “Yaari hai” in ‘73 he wrote some other beautiful tracks, mostly for Kalyanji Anandji’s films. Almost all the songs from Vishwas, for example are hauntingly simple and heartfelt. Here are two of the famous “virah” geets from the film:

Vishwas(1969):
MD: Kalyanji Anandji

Ek dhanwan…

Wo kya samjhe pyar ko jinka sab kuch chandi sona hai
Dhanwano ki is duniya mein dil to ek khilona hai
Sadiyon se dil tootta aaya dil ka ye bas rona hai
Jab tak chaha dil se khela aur jab chaha tod diya
Ek dhanwan ki…

Aap se humko bichde huye
Ek zamana beet gaya
Apna muqaddar bigde hue
Ek zamana beet gaya

Aap se milke in aankhon ne
Kitne khwab sajaye the
Jis gulshan mein hamne milke
Geet wafa ke gaaye the
Us gulshan ko ujde hue
Ek zamana beet gaya…

Kismat humko le aayi hai
Gulshan ke veerane mein
Aansun bhi nakaam rahe hain
Dil ke aag bujhane mein
Is veerane mein jalte hue
Ek zamana beet gaya
