After an unforgettable "Shaam-e-gham ki kasam" debut in 'Footpath' [not to consider the few numbers earlier scored by him as "Sharmaji", notably Rafi's 'Beewee' classic, "Akele mein woh ghabrate to honge"], Khaiyyam was, for long, relegated to one forgettable film after another, never, despite having his own distinct compositional idiom, making it to the big league.
