Hasrat Jaipuri

Birth: 15th April
Birthplace: Jaipur, Rajasthan, India.
Profession: Poet, Bollywood Film song Lyricists
Family: Wife, Two sons and a Daughter

Hasrat Jaipuri's real name was Iqbal Husain. Till 1939, he lived in hometown Jaipur where he studied English till 'secondary level' and then acquired his Urdu and Persian ‘taalim’ from his learned grandfather, Fida Husain. He began writing verse as late as the age of 20, and around that time, he fell in love with a neighborhood girl called Radha. He used to write poems for her but was not able to gather enough courage to express his love. But in his later life he didnt regret about those letters and poems being delivered. Raj Kapoor delivered it to the entire world as the perennial mantra for lovers of all generations through 'Yeh mera prem patra padhkar' in his film, 'Sangam' (1964).

Hasrat Jaipuri's First-Break

In Mumbai, Hasrat Jaipuri took the secure job of a bus conductor at a monthly salary of Rs. 11. But he never failed to satiated his creative urges by participating in mushairas. The late Prithviraj Kapoor heard his verse and recommended him to his son Raj Kapoor. During those says Raj Kapoor was looking for a lyricist and he happened to read some verses of Hasrat in a newspaper. Impressed with his penchant for romance, Raj who worked with Prithvi theatre then called him. But for several days, Hasrat couldn’t meet him and Kapoor would keep calling him. But when they finally met at the canteen of the Royal Opera House where Prithviraj Kapoor used to stage his plays, Raj Kapoor straightaway hired him for his first film Barsaat. Hasrat’s first song ‘Jiya bekaraar hai’ turned out to be a big hit. His second song, ‘Zindagi mein hardam rota hi raha’ rendered by Mohammed Rafi also was a hit and that made him a name to reckon with in film circles.

Association with Raj Kapoor

His association with Raj Kapoor and RK Studios continued till 1971. After Jaikishan's death and the failures of Mera Naam Joker and Kal Aaj Aur Kal, Raj Kapoor decided to change his music team. He made a team with Laxmikant Pyarelal and Anand Bakshi. But somehow he called back Hasrat Jaipuri for Prem Rog. That did not work out because someone recommended Amir Qazalbash to Raj Kapoor. Later he did 'Sun sahiba sun' for the movie 'Ram teri Ganga Maili', and three songs for 'Heena'.

Title Song Writer

Every lyricist of that genre, be it Hasrat, Shakeel, Shailendra or Raja Mehdi Ali Khan had their distinct styles. No one could overshadow anybody or write inferior stuff. Like for instance, Hasrat loved writing title songs, i.e. songs based on film titles. Writing a title song in those days was a difficult task, one had to keep the entire theme of the film in mind. And it’s a record of sorts for Hasrat to have penned nine title songs in a row. Some of them like ‘Deewana mujko log kahen’ (Deewana (old)), ‘Dil Ek Mandir’ (Dil Ek Mandir), ‘Raat aur din diya jale’ (Raat Aur Din), ‘Tere ghar ke saamne’ (Tere Ghar Ke Saamne) and ‘An evening in Paris’ (An Evening in Paris).

Hasrat Jaipuri was really lucky to have married a woman who advised him to invest his earnings in property. He owned a property near JVPD Scheme and earned enough to lead a comfortable life when there is no work. He never went behind the mujic directors, producers for work. Hasrat Jaipuri is very proud of his children - two sons and a daughter - but the art of poetry is God-gifted and cannot be learnt, and they dont seem to have been gifted with it.

Majrooh Sultanpuri

MY PAPA MY LIFE

Majrooh Sultanpuri's son Andaleb pays tribute to his abba who passed away on May 24 2001

He smiles from the laminated photograph in the living-room. It's a trifle difficult to believe that lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri is no more. A heart-rending silence prevails at his Bandra residence. His wife is still in a state of shock. While friends and family are yet to come to terms with his death. His youngest son Andaleb says, "I know he was 82 but it
happened so fast. I can't still believe that abba is gone forever." Recounting the sequence of events, he reveals that his father was suffering from fibrosis of the heart. "It was detected in February, he was put on steroids. The doctors said that with proper treatment, there was no need to worry for another six-seven years. Which is why his passing away is even more upsetting."

Andaleb says haltingly, "The steroids affected his immune system. He had a severe attack of pneumo nia and was admitted to a suburban hospital on May 16. I'm sorry to say but the hospital is too westernised. Their rules are very strict. Except for two people with special passes, no one is allowed to meet the patient outside visiting hours. Abba, was very emotional and attached to his family. He hated being alone. He wanted his family around him at all times." He continues emotionally, "He was taken to the ICCU and was put on the ventilator. Within three days, everything was over. The doctors had told me that once he went on the machine, he wouldn't be able to come out of it. So I knew the end was near." Tears well up in his eyes as he recalls his elder brother Eram's death in 1993. Says he, "His death shattered my parents. Abba aged overnight. He was never the same again. I'm the youngest of five children and naturally I was pampered. He still treated me like a child, even though I'm married and have kids of my own. He would still scold me as if I was a kid. "When he came home that day from hospital, a cricket match was on TV. He asked me to sit beside him and watch the match. I refused, saying that I had to go out. He started scolding me. He was like that. Always so alive and full of energy. He'd sit in his favourite chair, watch TV or scold someone. The house would be so alive with him around. And now he's gone away. Now the youngest child has become the head of the family. All responsibility is now mine. Only Allah knows how I'm going to fulfill it."

Flashbacking to the numerous stories he'd heard about his father, Andaleb reveals that Asrar Hussain Khan, aka Majrooh Sultanpuri, was born in Sultanpur, UP in 1919. Since his father was a sub-inspector, he couldn't afford the more expensive English education for his son. Majrooh instead completed his seven-year course of Dars-e-Nizamiani in Arabic and Persian and went on to take the degree of Alim. He then joined Lucknow's Takmeel-u-tib college of the Unani system of medicine. He was an established hakim when he happened to recite one of his ghazals in a mushaira held in Sultanpur. The ghazal was a big hit with the audience and Majrooh found his calling. He chucked his prosperous medical practice and took to writing poetry seriously. Soon he became a fixture at the mushairas and became great friends with the renowned Urdu poet Jigar Muradabadi. In 1945, Majrooh visited Bombay to attend a mushaira. Here his ghazals and poetry was greatly appreciated by the audience. One of the impressed listeners was producer A.R. Kardar. He contacted Jigar Muradabadi who put him onto Majrooh. Andaleb narrates, "My father refused to write for the movies. He didn't think much of them. But Jigar Muradabadi persuaded him, saying that movies would pay well and that would help support the family."

Kardar took him to music director Naushad, who put the young writer to test. He gave him a tune and asked him to write something in metre. "And my father wrote Jab usne gesu bikhraye, badal aaye jhoom ke. Naushad saab liked what he wrote and my father was signed on as the lyricist for Shahjehan." The songs Kar lijiye chal ke meri jannat ke nazare and Jab dil hi toot gaya, hum ji ke kya karenge became immensely popular. K.L. Saigal liked Jab dil hi so much that he wanted it to be played at his funeral. Shahjehan was followed by S. Fazil's Mehndi, Mehboob's Andaaz and Shahid Lateef's Arzoo. Just as Majrooh began establishing himself as a lyricist of repute, his leftist leanings got him into trouble. The government wasn't amused by his anti-establishment poems and he was put behind bars in 1949 along with other leftists like Balraj Sahni. "Morarji Desai was the Chief Minister of Bombay and he asked my father to apologise to save his skin. But abba refused and he was sent to jail for two years." While he was in jail, his el-dest daughter was born. Andaleb states, With wife and youngest son Andaleb Kya Kehna "Those days ammi was going through tough times financially. And there was no one to help. That's when Raj Kapoor came forward. He knew abba wouldn't accept money just like that. So he asked him to write a song. Abba wrote Ek din bik jaayega Movies which shot him right to the top.

Along with poet Faiz Ahmed Faiz, Majrooh Sultan-puri was considered the most notable writer of ghazals. Says Andaleb, "Those days the ghazal form was opposed by most (Dharam Karam) and he gave him a Rs 1,000. Abba always remained grateful to Raj Kapoor." Majrooh Sultanpuri then went on to write lyrics for such movies as CID, Paying Guest, Tumsa Nahin Dekha, Sujata, Kala Paani, Bambai Ka Babu, Manzil, Aarti, Aar Par, Mr & Mrs 55, Dilli Ka Thug, Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Hum Sab Chor Hain, Dil Deke Dekho. poets. They felt it was too effeminate, that it wouldn't succeed as a medium of expression. But abba proved them wrong." It was Majrooh's versatility that industry folk swear by. If he could write Jalte hain jiske liye (Sujata) and Hum bekhudi mein tumko pukare chale gaye (Kala Paani), he also penned Paanch rupaiya barah anna (Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi) and C-A-T cat (Dilli Ka Thug). "When abba wrote C-A-T cat, he was criticised severely for his inane lyrics. His only defence was that he was writing the song for a thug and not for a poet on screen. Ironically, it's considered a masterpiece today." composers from O.P. Nayyar to Anu Malik. He even stopped working with Navketan. He wasn't afraid of calling a spade a spade. That's because he was so confident of his work. He was a man of convictions. His mastery of the Urdu language was exemplary. He Andaleb's childhood memories are made up of film personalities dropping in at home for lunch or dinner. After every recording, Nasir Husain and R.D. Burman with his musicians would be at their home.
"I was very young but I still remember abba socialising with his friends after a hard day's work. They'd listen to the song they'd recorded and savour my mother's cooking. You know, Mrs Nasir Husain, Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle learnt cooking from my mother."

Apart from being a literary giant, Majrooh was a perfect family man, says the son. "As a child, each time I fell sick I'd be sure that he'd get me an imported toy," he smiles. "He was always there for us. Every Saturday and Sunday he'd take us to the Powai lake for fishing. Summer holidays were spent in Panchgani or hunting in Khandwa. We never felt he was a literary giant, he was just our abba. In fact, his serious writing suffered because of his family. He concentrated on film writing in order to secure the family's future." Quiz him about his father's reputation of being a no-nonsense man and Andaleb smiles, "Abba had a fight with almost all the film music composers from O.P. Nayyar to Anu Malik. He even stopped working with Navketan. He wasn't afraid of calling a spade a spade. That's because he was so confident of his work. He was a man of convictions. His mastery of the Urdu language was exemplary. He wouldn't give in to an argument if he wasn't convinced. And that I guess bugged some people. He got the reputation of being troublesome. If he was so arrogant, how come he was working till the last day of his life? All music composers said that he was the best when it came to writing on metre."
Majrooh Sultanpuri won his only Filmfare Award for Dosti. And that rankled the maestro a lot. "He felt cheated. He couldn't digest the fact that lesser writers walked away with so many awards. Look at his body of work. He's written nearly 4,000 songs. And his success rate in terms of popularity of songs was 95 per cent. So he couldn't understand what the criteria was for selecting winners. He was disgusted when he lost for Pehla nasha (Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar) and later for Aaj main upar (Khamoshi)." The son asserts that his abba still wasn't a bitter man. Then looking at his father's favourite chair, he sighs, "He used to sit there all the time and look after the house. But it's all over now. He'll never be there for us." I leave Andaleb to his memories. And that smiling photograph on the wall.

Gulshan Bawra

Birth: 12th April
Birthplace: Sheikhupura, Pakistan
Profession: Poet, Bollywood Film song Lyricists

Gulshan Kumar Mehta, popularly known as Gulshan Bawra was born at a place 30 kms from Lahore in a place called Sheikhupura. His father had a construction business. His family was a victim to the paritition riots where young Gulshan saw his parents being killed in front of his eyes. His elder sister at Jaipur, brought him and his elder brother up. After his brother got a job, they shifted to Delhi where he graduated from the Delhi University. During college, he began to write poetry.

The Struggle

He wanted to come into films and applied for a job with the Railways. He was posted to Kota which was then in Madhya Pradesh but when he arrived there, the vacancy was filled. His next call was luckily that for the post of a clerk at Mumbai and he arrived in the city in 1955.

Gulshan struggled to get a film break, initially keeping his job on. Kalyanji (-Anandji), then on his own as Kalyanji Virji Shah, gave him his first opening in Chandrasena (1959) in the song ‘Main kya jaanu kahan laage yeh saawan matwala re’ sung by Lata Mangeshkar.

Success

K-A's first joint film, the Meena Kumari-Balraj Sahni starrer Satta Bazar later the same year marked his first brush with success with hits like ‘Tumhein yaad hoga kabhi hum mile the’ (Lata-Hemant), ‘Aakde ka dhanda’ (Rafi) and ‘Chandi ke chand tukdon ke liye’ (Hemant Kumar).

It was during the making of this film that the film’s distributor Shantibhai Patel christened him ‘Bawra’. He was very impressed by his lyrics but could not reconcile their excellence to the typical young man in his twenties who wore a rather colourful shirt. He said, 'Main iska naam Gulshan Bawra rakhoonga. He looks like a 'bawra' (madman).' When the film was released in Mumbai, the posters carried just three names, those of director Ravindra Dave, composers Kalyanji Anandji, and Gulshan Bawra, though the roster of lyricists included the topmost names of that time, Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra. 'I left my job in 1961 and things were pretty smooth,' says Bawra.

To date, Gulshan Bawra has written only 240 songs in a 42-year career, which is less than the number of films so many top names have done! But he claims to have the highest average among lyricists. 'I never believed in working too much or being aggressive, one of the main reasons for which was that I had no children. In my time, I have charged Rs 90,000 for a film at a time when one could purchase a big flat for Rs 65,000! I have not compromised on my price - because I have never compromised on my work.'

Major Hits

Gulshan Bawra believes in sensible lyrics and avoids lyrics that are conceptually defective, or have grammatical mistakes. 'Even Shailendra,' he says, 'wrote meaningless stuff like ‘Awara hoon, awara hoon, ya gardish mein hoon aasmaan ka taara hoon ‘, which should actually be ‘Awara hoon, awara hoon, main gardish mein bhi aasmaan ka taara hoon’. Gardish refers to struggle or turbulence and stars are never in this condition. Natural or universal truths should not be tampered with in the name of poetic license or to fit in to a given metre', he says.

Hit Songs of Gulshan Bawra
Song Movie
Mere desh ki dharti Upkar
Yaari hai imaan mera Zanjeer
Sanam teri kasam Sanam Teri Kasam
Agar tum na hote Agar Tum Na Hote
Tu tho hai wohi Yeh Vaada Raha
Aati Rahengi Baharen Kasme Vaade
Kasme Vaade Nibhayenge Hum Kasme Vaade
Jivan ke har mod pe mil jayenge humsafar Jhoota Kahin Ka
Teri Badmashiyan Zulmi
Waada karle saajana Haath Ki Safai
Peenewalon ko peene ka bahana chahiye Haath Ki Safai
Le pappiyaan jhappiyaan paale hum Haqeeqat

Almost half of his songs have been with R.D.Burman. His last release was Zulmi (1999) and his last hit was ‘Le pappiyaan jhappiyaan paale hum’ for Haqeeqat/1995, which landed him in his only controversy - of writing a vulgar song.

Gulshan Bawra's Present

As always, Bawra is selective and is doing two films only today. He finds today's filmmakers, music barons and composers musically - illiterate and thus is even choosier than before, as he lives a secure, relaxed life. 'Why should I torture myself or waste my lyrics and talents on those who will ask me to do all sorts of compromises?' he asks. His films in the '90s include, besides Haqeeqat and Zulmi, Qurbani Rang Jaayegi, Tehkiqaat, Laat Saab, Maidan-E-Jung, Indrajeet and Chor Pe Mor.
