(Vyjayanti) Phoolon ki Sej (1964)

Anjali Pictures from Madras produced this original Hindi movie. In general when a Hindi movie is made by film folks from South it is usually based on a hit southern language movie they or someone else made. But in this case, it was not. The producers bought the rights to a popular Hindi novel and decided to venture into making it directly in Hindi.

The “Anjali Pictures” banner became famous for the 1958 Hindi film, "Suvarna Sundari" which had the award winning fabulous music by Aadi Narayana Rao, and starred his wife Anjali Devi in the lead. Anjali, a popular Telugu film actress in 50's and early 60's, appeared in over 200 films. Even though she appeared in a handful of Hindi films, "Ladki" made in 1953 is an example, Anjali Devi was not in this movie.

The husband and wife team of Anjali and Rao, who financed this movie, went almost bankrupt when the movie was a dismal failure. Some fine music by Rao could not rescue the drab movie.

I am uploading all songs from this film in two back-to-back posts, all originally uploaded by the Forum members, thank you. Also, please be forewarned that the quality of these songs is iffy.

This was one of Burmanda's last movies. Suffering from ill health he still managed to take a few assignments. The movie made by Pramod Chakravarty was shot extensively on foreign locales. Inspite of few good songs and exotic locales, the movie didn't click with the audience. Hema Malini and Dharmendra made a guest appearance in this film.

Saira who made such a splash with the beautiful musical in her debut movie "Junglee" in 1961, appeared in only 43 movies. This film, "Faisla", is her last appearance in a film. (Vyjayanti) Sangam (1964)

This movie is an example of the magic of Raj Kapoor. He takes a hackneyed and an ordinary story and turns it into a blockbuster. It had all the glitter and luster but no warmth to show for. It was photographed in dazzling Technicolor. It was shot in various locations in Europe starting a trend in Hindi movies that is in full vogue today. It had some magnificent music by the incomparable duo Shankar & Jaikishan. It had a pretty lady in the lead role. You mix all this into a potion and that spells movie magic.

Apparently Raj Kapoor waited to make this movie for a long time. When he decided to make it, he had Dilip Kumar in mind as part of the love triangle. Dilip didn't forget what happened with Mehboob Khan's "Andaz (1949)". Also, Vyjayanti Mala who was one of Dilip’s favorite heroines, was slowly drifting away from him. Raj recognizing this immediately had her sign to play his leading lady in the movie. The net result was that Dilip decided to not accept the offer. The role eventually went to Rajendra Kumar.

Raj earlier starred with Vyjayanti in “Nazrana (1961)” which enjoyed only a limited success. But opposite Vyjayanti’s youthful looking figure, Raj looked old (ironically the hit song from this movie itself “Main Kaa Karoon Raam Mujhe Buddha Mil Gaya” sounds so appropriate here), completely out of shape, and even appeared tired in some of the scenes. But there was so much gloss over the product that people really didn’t get to see what is all that litter beneath all that shiny glitter.

I am uploading the songs from this beautiful album in four back-to-back posts. The first two posts contain all of the songs from the film. The third post contains various specials. Finally, the fourth post contains some extended version songs.

(Waheeda) Reshma aur Shera (1971)

Sunil Dutt spent considerable amount of his fortunes and endless energy in bringing this Romeo and Juliet type story to the screen. He shot most of the movie in Rajasthan near the great Thar Desert. It has stunning photography capturing the desolate nature of the desert that humbles even the mighty.

Apart from the scorching heat of the desert and family feud as the background, the movie has one of the great musical compositions. Jaidev, well trained under Burman da, was absolutely magnificent in scoring several haunting songs that leave an indelible impression. It will be remembered as Jaidev’s brilliant and an everlasting contribution.

The movie has several good performances to boast. But if one has to single out, it will be remembered for the stunning performance of Waheeda Rehman. She gave a performance of her career in going through the many stages of womanhood, from an innocent girl to an eager lover to a defiant daughter to a touchingly tragic heroine.

Yet, for all of its magnificence in scope and scale aided by beautiful performances and unforgettable musical score, Sunil spared no expenses in bringing the story to the screen, the final product was a financial disaster for Dutt as it was totally rejected by the public.

I am uploading these beautiful songs in back-to-back two posts. Here is the first set...

(Mala) Pooja Ke Phool (1965)

This movie and the Telugu movie of 1962, "Manchi Manasulu", were based on a hit Tamil film. Whereas both Tamil and Telugu movies were huge hits, Hindi version was only did an average business. The highlight of this film is its music. One can always count on Madan Mohan Saab. Here he has not only his regulars like Lata and Rafi Saab sing but also utilizes talents of Asha very effectively. Several of the songs became popular. Lataji's solo "Meri Aankhon Se" is a standout of the album.

I am uploading all songs from an original sound track album. I am also including here a special version of "Meri Aankhon Se" with Jagjit Singh's introduction. Jagjit Singh has some glowing words to say about Madan Mohanji's music. This song is taken from the album "Legends: Madan Mohan - The Instinctive Genius (CD 3)".

Now for the songs of "Pooja Ke Phool"...

Kishore Kumar
Thank you for posting these songs.

Two more songs composed for this movie appear on Madan Mohan website:

a) an earlier recording of 'Meri Aankhon Se' - with a somewhat different orchestral arrangement featuring Santoor pieces in addition to the Sitar ones. The web-site narrates how, a few weeks after this original recording, the ever-perfectionist Madan Mohanji felt the interludes could be scored differently and hence re-recorded the song.

a) a song later shelved from the film (Mujhe Apni Akhiyan, De De O Pyare Panchhi) because of some script changes.

I am posting them below.

Best wishes,
