Baat Kanu Roy ki Chali hai to here is an account of Kanu Roy by Gulzar (This
was published in Filmfare a few years ago.. As you read you would find the
article is not penned by Gulzar saab but the writer who spoke to him, has
given the final words.. She couldn't do justice with the thoughts and
anecdotes in terms of writing.. Anyway it still is a good read )


As a lyricist, I've worked with So many music directors. And each composer
has a loads of stories to narrate about lyricists. At any given time, the
lyricist jots down some dummy words to the tune not necessarily matching the
situation, just so that he gets the right track for the metre (meter) of
the song. For instance, the dummy words for the famous Asha Bhosle-Geeta
Dutt duet "Jaanu Jaanu ri, kaahe khanake hai tora kangana" from Insaan Jaag
Utha went something like "Bapu Bapuji, Bokari ka doodh peete hain". In
recent time I remember another dummy line.. "Tadap tadap ke dil dhadake,
main joota pahan ke aayi". Even music directors add dummy verse to explain
the metre of a song. And all that makes for very funny lines. Like some
music directors use "meri jaan meri jaan, jaaneneman, jaaneman tu meri jaan"
others use baharein, raahein, baahein.. Some prefer words like "Mere Sanam"
while some others simply used sounds like "da da da daa da da daa" or "la la
laa la la laa" or "ra ra raa ra ra raa" to explain the metre.


But Kanu Roy was the only music director to use sounds like "ti ta ti ti, ti
ta ti ti". It sounded quite funny to hear it. I dont know why but he always
stucked with "ti ta ti ti". In that sense he was very unique from other
music directors of his time.


Kanu Roy had picked up his musical notes from Bengal. He began his career by
assisting Salil Chowdhury. Salil da had two Kanu's working for him.. Kanu
Ghosh and Kanu Roy. While Kanu ghosh was outgoing extrovert Kanu Roy was as
introvert. It seems Kanu Roy was a welder by Profession. And he'd worked on
the extensive repairs on Howrah Bridge when he was young.


He was a tall, lean man of dark complexion. And I remember him as a very
quiet and humble person. thoda daboo, thoda humble... He had a very bechara
look about him.. It was Basu Bhattacharya who gave him his break as a music
director in Uski Kahani. Basu launched his film on a shoestring budget.
Actually all his movies were made on very tight budgets. So he always
required friends and technicians who would work for free or within his low
budget. I remember I received only Rs. 200 for writing Avishkaar. And he
joked saying.. "I am only giving this so you dont complain that I made you
work for free". and I remember pocketing the money quietly because "paise ki
zaroorat hamesha rehti thi"


Basu was like that only. We were great friends. So there was no question of
feeling bad about his ways. Of course there were times where we would
exchange a few heated words, but it was nothing serious. There are times
when I wish he were here today. In difficult times Basu was an honest
friend, who'd alway give you honest opinions. You need such people. Besides,
he was an affectionate man, always ready to help people even if he didn't
know them. He'd go out of his way to help.. Ye Kamaal Ki Quality thi Basu
me.. but he talked a lot, and you had to bear with that.. But for all his
egocentric postures and eccentricities he was a warm hearted man.


But.. You could never get Basu to spend on his movies. Kanu would never get
more than Six or Eight musicians to record with. and poor Kanu couldn't do
anything about it. Though his melodies were awesome, he didn't have any
bargaining powers with Basu. He didn't get much work out side Basu's banner.
Unfortunately he wasn't in a position to go out and ask for work. He wasn't
that kind of person. He couldn't hard sell himself. I remember there were
times when he would literally beg to Basu to give him an extra violin or
two. Kanu and Basu were great friends too.. So whenever Kanu asked for an
extra musical instrument, Basu would tell him to get it with his own money.
ab uske paas kahan paise hote the. After much persuation Basu would relent
about adding another violin or sarod.


This is how he worked with Basu. They would hire Bhansali recording studio
in Tardeo every morning for three-four hours before the regular recording
shifts started. And under such constraints, he composed songs like Meri
jaan, mujhe jaan na kaho (Anubhav), Logon ke gharon me rahata hoon, Boliye
surili boliyan, Machal ke jab bhi, Zindagi phoolon ki tarah (Griha Pravesh)


Zindagi phoolon ki tarah was Bas's pun on words. We were discussing the song
situation for Griha Pravesh. As usual, he was stuffing me with heavy duty
thoughts he wanted in the song. As he spoke, I simply translated one of his
Bengali lines as Zindagi Phoolon Ki. He loved the line though I was not keen
on it.. I told him its not poetry but sheer play of words. But
he insisted on that line so it remained. And when Kanu composed it, it
sounded good. Music lovers appreciate the song even today. And I still
maintain its not a good poetry.. But Shairi aur Music me dalil nahin chalti
(You cant reason with people when it comes to Poetry and Music). Either you
like it or dont.. You cant argue people to like music.


Interestingly, though Basu loved punning, he hated humor in his movies. If
you remember, there was no humor in his movies. We used to have serious
quarrels while scripting. He used to delete all humor from my dialogues.
Films used to be very serious matter for him. And I used to tell him, yeah
its a serious matter but that doesn't mean we cant have a little fun. ut his
stand was "Yeh mazaak karane ki jagah nahin hai" He would give me loads of
heavy thoughts and wanted everything to be pushed into the scene or the
song. We would always have argument on that.


Kanu of course sincerely composed everything that came his way. His career
ended with his life. Though we knew him well, he always remained aloof from
everyone. No one really knows much about his personal life. I dont think he
was married. He lived in poverty and died in poverty too.


Come to think of it, he played an insignificant role in the world of music.
But somehow he still lingers on in our memories. And thats the beauty of his
work. His melodies also linger on like him.
