Before Mohamed Rafi shot up, like Laika, to displace every existing singer at the time, G M Durrani was, in the '40s, one of the most respected voices. His "Neend hamari khwab tumhare", as scored by Shyam Sunder for 'Nai Kahani', remains a classic to this day. His "Khaayegi thokren yeh jawani kahan kahan" remains one of 'Mirza Sahiban's most memorable numbers. As in the case of "Khayeegi thokren", as well as this golden-throated singer's evergreen duets with Noorjehan in the same film, "Haath seene pe jo rakh do" and "Tum aankhon se door ho", however, Durrani's most well-remembered numbers remain in the melancholy idiom, like Talat's. A song such as this breezy duet with Geeta, from the 1956 'Awara Shehzadi', as composed by Jimmy, therefore, comes as a welcome change:
