If, as a singer, he was unarguably in a class of his own, as a composer, Hemant Kumar could either be very very good, or very very bad. That said, the class of his compositions in the 1953 to 1958 period was normally unquestionable, be it in 'Shart', or 'Anand Math', or 'Durgeshnandini' or, of course, 'Nagin'. Another noticeable feature was that, when Hemant sang his own compositions, the result was often rewarding ... this was something which continued till his later years - a la "Tum pukaar lo" ('Khamoshi') or "Janam se banjaara ho bandhu" ('Rahgir'). Geeta Dutt, too, was seen to be especially expressive when under Hemant's baton - as was apparent from her very first number for him, "Na yeh chaand hoga na taare rahenge" in 'Shart'. These three numbers from the 1956 Shashikala-Pradeep Kumar starrer, 'Arab Ka Saudagar', highlight what is said above:

Hemant, in fact, was so fond of "Mohabbat ka nateeja" that he himself sang it, later, as a 'version' number. Here it is:
