Talk 'Annadata' and we are unable, even with our vintage ears, to cross 1972, when Salil Chowdhury captured the attention of young and old alike with one evergreen after another - be it Lata's "Nis din nis din mere zulmi sajan" or "Raaton ke saaye ghane", Mukesh's "Nain hamaare saanjh sakaare", Manna Dey's "Yahan ab kya rehna" or Kishore's "Guzar jaaye din din din", not to speak of that maverick singer's duet with Sabita Chowdhury "O meri pran sajni Champavati aaja", with the immortal "Champavati tu aaja" refrain bearing the Salil chhaap all over. Yet, with an effort, if we strain our memories further, and proceed 20 years further back in time, we find that, in the 1952 'Annadata', tabla maestro Mohd Shafi composed an equally "impactive" score, with one Lata lovely after another, and Rafi in his trademark "anthemish" vein in "O moorakh insaan" ... here, then, are 8 vintage numbers, from Mohd Shafi's 1952 'Annadata':
