He played the role of a buffoon called Popatlal in Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, and the character became so popular that it soon became synonymous with the actor.
So very true. I remember the old timers talking about "Popatlal" the character he played in Jab Pyar Kisi se Hota Hai. Again, his comedy on "Hamam" soap there is also memorable. Before that in 1958 he had a comedy stint in DIL DEKE DEKHO where his encounter with the donkeys was hilarious. In PHIR WOHI DIL LAYA HOON (1963) and MERE SANAM (1964) also he had a major role.
It was a treat to watch him doing his antics of pulling up his trousers, or falling in the muck or sitting on a cake and some such things. He looked so harmless and sort of brought a warmth to his role and made the audience sit at ease and watch bufoonery. Those roles were always such that enhanced the prestigate of the main hero unlike the roles of other comedians who were sometimes able to outdo the heroes in the same movies.
I'm sure the younger generations too would love his comic roles in the old movies. His death is indeed saddening.
