Mumbai: Rajendra Nath, popular Hindi film comedian of the 1960s and 1970s who was better known as Popatlal, died late on Wednesday at his home here. He was 78.

Rajendra Nath, who had essayed comic roles in almost all movies starring Shammi Kapoor of the 60s, was ailing for a long time. He breathed his last in his Khar home in northwest Mumbai. He had acted in many films in Hindi, Punjabi, Bhojpuri and also in South Indian movies.

Rajendra Nath got a break with a small comic role in I S Johar's Hum Sab Chor Hain (1956), with Shammi Kapoor and Nalini Jaywant in the lead. He played the role of a buffoon called Popatlal in Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai, and the character became so popular that it soon became synonymous with the actor.

So very true. I remember the old timers talking about "Popatlal" the character he played in Jab Pyar Kisi se Hota Hai. Again, his comedy on "Hamam" soap there is also memorable. Before that in 1958 he had a comedy stint in DIL DEKE DEKHO where his encounter with the donkeys was hilarious. In PHIR WOHI DIL LAYA HOON (1963) and MERE SANAM (1964) also he had a major role.

It was a treat to watch him doing his antics of pulling up his trousers, or falling in the muck or sitting on a cake and some such things. He looked so harmless and sort of brought a warmth to his role and made the audience sit at ease and watch bufoonery. Those roles were always such that enhanced the prestigate of the main hero unlike the roles of other comedians who were sometimes able to outdo the heroes in the same movies.

I'm sure the younger generations too would love his comic roles in the old movies. His death is indeed saddening.

Sad news!

He happened to sit on my seat in Indian Airlines like more than a decade ago,
I smiled and pointed him his correct seat for which he was a bit embarrassed and angry at the air-hostess for the error.
He smiled at me and said "Sorry Beta".

I had the honor of talking to this comedy legend, 5 minute ke liye hi sahi.
I always thought his name was Popatlal, until recently when I was corrected by a friend.
I was accompanied by my father who had a long chat with him throughout the journey.
