I had long ago hosted on yoodleeyoo.com a list of Raaga based songs of Guru. Now can list them here and share info on the raag and taal that goes with it, with the help of knowledgeable members here

Guru was perhaps the only male legend who not only lived through the change of music for five decades, but interpreted the music of a particular era in his style which remained immortal to this day. Even though Guru did not receive as many classical songs as Manna-da or Rafisaab, it cannot be denied that some of his songs were based on classical ragas. Kishoreda, Kya Baat Hai?....this is the most exhaustive list of Guru's classical/semi-classical songs i have ever seen....i always wanted something like this...thanks so much for posting the list....if someone can organise this list, it would be great......i am very keen on this list and perhaps would organise it for me too...and definitely will upload for everyone here...just that it would take some time....from the looks of it, it does seem as if it would take time though you have already done the main task....

In the list i didn't see Husn Bhi Hai Udaas Udaas...that was the first classical based song that Guru sang...and the credit for that goes to Anil Biswas....who decided to let Guru supercede Manna Dey, who was widely believed to have been given that song for singing.....something within Anil Biswas da suggested to him that Guru's voice would suit it better....and rest is history as they say.....

PLEASE PARDON MY IGNORANCE AND SOME ONE EDUCATE ME. Let me raise my very basic doubt at this very initial stage.I find all of them having different tunes.But then how do you say that the last cluster is all BHAIRAVI..! what essentially characterises a raag? how do i know the next song i hear is Raag Bhairavi or not..

let me try :

sigh, GF....what that means is :
any song can be played from any harmonium or any instrument's keys or sur...(without losing its raag name)
for example song "mere naina sawan bhado" is made out of the raag "shivranjini"
now guru sang that song from SA yane ki C......now lets say kumar sanu sings the same song, but from a different key (C#) now there is no change of raag there, coz he only sang it from different key (higher)..


a raag is made out of certain notes (musical notes)

there are 12 musical notes in music (general...all countries)
C...... C# ....... D....... D#....... E ....... F....... F#....... G .......G#....... A....... A#........ B

some raags only uses 5 of these notes and some raags use 7 of these nots and some uses less or more of these nots in themselves...

so, basically a raag is a combination of certain musical notes....if you use anything other than the one that is in the raag, you will break the raag....so that will no longer have same raag's name....


a good example would be , if you put an harmonium in front of you and try to sing all those songs of guru , from the same key , lets say from SA ,which is made from raag "bhairavi" you WIILL notice that they used only certain white keys and certain black keys(musical notes) for all the song (same keys but in different order)...basically you WILL find out that the person who wrote song "chingaari koye bhadke" and the person who wrote "aate jaate khubsoorat" used the SAME notes from the same raag to creat "aate jaate khubsoorat"....the only different is that he put the different notes in different places...

rem* ragaz have different times too...

my pleasure guys....i hope i was some help....if you can understand these ragas, i tell you, you wont believe how much more you will enjoy guru's song....one more thing that i forgot was, you know there's this other raga which is called "darbaari" in old times when singers used to go to perform in front of the king, mostly they had to sing a song from raga "darbaari" so i believe the raga "dabaari" comes from kings darbaar...that song from "moghole azam" (pyar kya toh darnaa kya jab") has a touch of darbaari to it ....


now this pictures show all the notes in harmonium....so regarding our chart, if you hit (press) each note that was assigned to a raga, you should hear how a certain raga sounds in real life ...

you also can chose to start your SA from a different key....
but the 1st image is very much standard...

now westren musicians have a little different names for all those harmonium/keyboard notes/keys...

so RE-KOMAL to westren music is called C# (C sharp)...
the black key after every white key is called # (sharp)
and before every white key is called "flat"

so , C# is the same as Db(D-flat) in westren music

And wow, GuruFan!!!! you have asked a question which, i dont think even a music Vidhwan had been able to define precisely to date....Kishoreda has given a wonderful explaination and framework for explaining raaga...thanks kishoreda.....

I am no Dhurandhar at raaga (GF, you really seem to have fallen for this word).....what i know is any progression of notes in a systematic fashion is fundamentally a raaga, PROVIDED:
--it sounds melodious (now we have to differentiate cacophony from melody, don't we?)
--there are at least five notes in the progression of notes (normally five or seven)

So, while there are certain well known established raagas (established on account of their known melodious effect which made them being used by many people many times over over generations), that doesn't mean that all the raagas are over and out for good....infact new raagas get created every now and then by masters of music...and as these new found raagas find wider use, they get a nomenclature (of course at times over a proper naming ceremony function )

Now, why do two songs which are supposed to be based on same raaga sound different? (I also used to wonder about the same thing when i just started to appreciate music in school)...actually one cant go by the overt sound of it....the melodious feel of the two songs will be similar, if based on same raaga...so while on the face of it Kora Kagaz Tha Man Mera from Aradhana and Dil Pukare Aa Re Aa Re from Jewel Thief might sound different, both based on Raag Pahadi....if one notices carefully they are absolutely similar in their melodious feel and progression...the two songs could come across as different (again i would the word "on the face of it", because they are not fundamentally different), because:
--the taals (beats) on which they are being sung could be different
--there may be a small variation in the form of one of the notes missing from the progression in one of the songs, keeping the basic note progression same otherwise....no main note called "vadi", however, can be missing,
