Bollywood singer Udit Narayan Saturday lodged a complaint against some media persons for allegedly assaulting and abusing him when he was leaving the Bihar women's commission office here after admitting for the first time that Ranjana Jha was his first wife.

Narayan had accepted Jha as his wife Friday in a written statement to the commission.

'I recognise and accept Ranjana Jha as my wife and promise to look after her and to provide her maintenance,' he told the commission.

Prior to his assurance, Narayan had been denying Ranjana's claim and had repeatedly told the media that he did not know 'any Ranjana', and had never married her. He alleged it was a conspiracy to defame him.

Sources close to the singer said that he filed the complaint in Kotwali police station here against some reporters of the electronic media.

In April this year Jha claimed that she was legally wedded to Narayan and lodged a complaint with the commission seeking justice and rights of a wife after Narayan denied that she was his wife.

Even last month Jha was shocked and hurt by Narayan who referred to her as 'lady', instead of Ranjana or as 'wife'.

The commission fixed July 28 as the last date for Narayan to appear before it to clarify or explain his move for a compromise with Jha. The commission's decision followed his invitation to Jha for a closed-door talk to arrive at a compromise.

Jha, a resident of Nirmali village in Supaul district, claims she married the singer in 1984, and his present wife, Deepa Narayan, was not his legal wife.
