thank god we didn't do that Request List : )

suhana_safar
Uni ji,

I have most of the songs in your wish list. You will however have to teach me step by step on how to upload songs.
unni
Suhana safar:

First of all, can we please cut out the formalities. Please call me just Unni, and I would rather address you by your real name, and not by your screen name --- unless you would prefer to keep it that way. A die-hard Rafian like you bearing the name of a famous Mukesh number --- zara ajub sa lagtha hai! Kum-say-kum apna naam "JUNGLEE" ya "JAANWAR" ya "BUDTAMEEZ" tho rakkho.

No, I am only kidding.

The first step is to copy the track to the hard drive. When copying from CD it is easy, since Windows Media Player already gives us that facility. But if we are copying from a tape, then we need the software for that. Since I am not a computer whiz, I had to buy a "mixer" (hardware) and download the software that comes with the package. But sensible people just connect the tape player to the computer by using the right wires. Then all you would need to do is download the software to "copy" the track from the tape to the hard drive --- this again is available as free download at Download.com. The whole idea should be to find and use free software.

The track you copy (from tape or CD) to the hard drive will be in WAV format (the format for playing music on the usual music systems). Since this is an 'expanded" format, we need to compress it to mp3 format for uploading, for which the currently popular program is the free download Thomson mp3PRO.

The last step is to compress the track further by "zipping" it with WINZIP or WINRAR (again free downloads).

The messaging system of this form gives us the option to attach a file to the message. Click on the "Browse.." button at the bottom of the messaging screen until the name of that compressed/zipped file appears as the "path".

(If you click the "'Preview Post" button, the path to the attachment disappears from the attachment path bar. So the "Add Reply" button should be clicked when the "path" to the file is showing in that bar).

Please do not be thrown off by what might initially appear as being very technical. It really is not. As you would already know, acquiting computer skills at our level as "users" is just a matter of playing around and trying out things. We don't need a Ph.D. in computer science!

And please don't be an idiot like me and spend money on acquiring stuff to do it. Particularly if you are in India, where you can easily get great technical help from friends/colleagues as well guidance for the right software.

suhana_safar
Hi Unni,

Well actaully I got my name from Rafisaabs song from Suhana Safar. "Yeh suhana safar uthi nahi hein nazaron se nazar.
Great song just like all his songs.

Whenever I try to copy from a Cd it goes to my documents rather than the dard drive. What to do

I also have a Win rar , can that help.

I will try to upload tomorrow.
Cheers.
unni
Suhana:

It doesn't matter if the file goes to My Documents. Just go to the songs file in My Documents and then convert it to mp3 and then zip it.

When you attach it to the message, the path will read something like:
C:\Documents and Settings\My Documents\My Music\Meri Mohobbat.rar

Now we are getting somewhere!

Sharad:

You wrote that you have the "Dil Tera Deewana" DVD which has "Masoom chehra". Apparently, when I uploaded it, some members were unable to download it. I even tried to send to them as e-mail attachments both this song and "Phool ka shabaab kya". But no dice. Despite mp3 and zip, the e-mails could not be delivered --- something to do with file size and HotMail, etc.

Would you please U/L "Massom chehra" from your DVD, since even my computer has complained about problems in reading that file.

I don't think my U/L has already been enshrined in the Song Library. So maybe we can go with your shorter version.

What application are you using to rip off an mp3 from a CD? If I know, I might be able to help.

There will be a place where you can change the default location of the new mp3 files created.
Sharad
Unni Unc....you are in CT?
ohh You neve told me, or maybe you said it here I did not read
that's cool, you're about.....um 14-16 hours north of me I think

Sorry I don't have Dil Tera Deewana on DVD, I don't think there is an Original Version of Dil Tera Deewana out yet!

CDex does a fine job of ripping songs from CD
Recording audio from DVD or any other thing that is playing on your computer speakers
it convers WAV TO MP3 easily
everything is so easy and easy here with CDex

Did you download it yet ?

btw you done, sears, jeers, lears, tears, fears...
hopefully nothing starting with a Q : )

SS:

Using WIN RAR to "zip" the file is the last step before attaching the file to your message (to send as an U/L).

Let me see if I can walk you through this, although I am sure you would already know most of it.

I am assuming you have Windows Media Player on your computer.

When you insert a music CD into the CD-ROM drive, the Windows Media Player program may automatically appear on the screen and the first song on the CD will start playing. Othewise click on the Windows Media Player icon on your desktop and the program will appear and show a list of the tracks on the CD. If you choose a song by clicking on it and then clicking PLAY, that particular track will play.

What you want to do is to copy songs. So, click the STOP tab to stop the playing. On the left of the screen you will see among the vertically listed options: "COPY FROM CD" and also "COPY TO CD".

You are intending to copy a song from the CD to the hard drive, so choose the "COPY FROM CD" option, which brings up a new screen, again listing all the songs but this time with a check-mark in the box preceding each song title. If you click COPY, all the songs will be copied to the hard drive. Since you want to copy only one song, uncheck all the others, and leave checked the song you want copied.

At the bottom of the screen will show the "path" of that recording, something like: C:\My Documents\My Music\Unknown Artist........

Make a careful note of that path.

After the song is copied, close the Windows Media Player program. Go to your desktop and right-click on the START button. The window that will pop up will have an item EXPLORE. Click on that, it will take you to the directory of all the files on the computer.

Since you know the "path" of your copied song, you can find the file in which the track has been copied and stored. In the directory, under the files listed as being in the C drive, you will see My Documents. You may have to expand that by clicking on the plus sign alongside. A further list of files (the ones in My Documents) will "drop down" and there you will see My Music. If you click on that or expand it, you will see the file "Unknown Artist", and when you click on that you should see the song listed (by name or track number).

The song is stored in WAV format. You would first need to convert it to MP3, and then use WIN RAR to zip it. Now it is ready to be sent as an attachment.

But let us first get you going with copying from CD to the hard drive, i.e. to the My Documents on the C drive and then locating where it has been stored. If you can locate the copied song file, then you would go the next step of converting it into mp3 and then using WIN RAR to zip it.

Just to address your concern, the song will be copied to a file under My Documents. That is exactly where it should go. It is only a question of finding where it is stored under My Documents, and then converting/zipping it.

Best of luck --- Unni

SS:

This is further to my last posting.

On second thoughts I am nervous about sending you to the Files Directory by clicking on EXPLORE. Since that is where all the Program Files are listed, it is not an area to take chances with.

Instead, just click on MY DOCUMENTS on the desktop and then search down for the file where the song is copied, then proceed as per my earlier message.

BABUL KAUN GHADI YEH MOHD. RAFI UMANG

Enjoy!

suhana_safar
Unni,

Thanks for that. For some reason the songs are getting copied to the library.

I am trying anyway. Song is Zindagi guzar ne ko...full version. Trll me how I went
suhana_safar
Rafisaab + Sahir + Ravi = great result
unni
SS:

THAT WAS PURRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRFECT!

Wow! That was fast work all right!

Right on, mahn! Now go for it!

Bilkul such hai.......zindagi guzarney ko saathi ek chahiye........do saathiyan milay, koshish ki, aur kamyaab ho gayey! But deserve all the credit!

Cheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeers!

unni
SS:

CORRECTION: The last line should have read: But YOU deserve all the credit!

I am so ex-si-kited, it is difficult to type right.
suhana_safar
Thnaks Unni,

The credit also goes to you for guiding me correctly. Now can you tell me why my uploads are going to the library.

How do i get them to copy on my documents.

Cheers
unni
SS:

Please let me know if there are any other files in the library, and what some of them are.

suhana_safar
Unni,

The files are mainly music related. I dont know why its getting copied there.
unni
SS:

Apparently, the Windows Media Player has set the "library" as the default file for music. Just leave it as it is. Now we know that whatever music you copy will go into the "library". It is not necessary that it should go into My Documents. But, for all I know, "library" may be a sub-file under My Documents. Even if it is not, nothing to bother about.

The other music-related files in "library" must have been there originally, they must have come with the system. For the present, just leave them alone.

So now, every time you copy a track, go to "library" and you should find it there. Do not change the name of that file.

You have found out where the track is copied to. You have successfully converted to mp3 and zipped it. And you have been able to attach it to your message and upload it.

Then you're fine.

myawan
Congratulations for success Suhana ji!
