Hi I have collected lots of material on self teaching... I would love to have a real GURU to teach me as guru bin gyan kahan se paau ... I mean in term of pronounciation, some difficult word translation, etc. etc.. It helps to learn from someone...

Link tau mujhe yaad nahi yaar... bahoot pehle archive kar liya tha... meri adaat hain jo achha lagta hain ...seedha dil mein... i mean harddisk mein uttar deta hoon .... But most of my files names are relevant to link names... do a google using the file name... see you might end up getting the link in result if its not already out of business ...

For anything new.... whatever it maybe..... requires lots of dedication and patience... which I dont see nowadays...... they lose interest in it after a day or two... anyways coming to the topic...... anyone can learn anything....

There's good news here. If there is one language which can be learnt by oneself, it is Sanskrit. This is partially so, because we usually don't have any other option. Bulk of the credit goes, of course, to Paanini for the sharpness and logic with which he created the rules of Sanskrit grammer.

Here's my humble advice for beginners and for folks who cannot carry on a basic spoken conversation yet -

1) Pick up any beginners book on Paanini's grammer, and start going through the usages.

2) Pick up the CBSE text books from Stds 8 and 9, if (and when) you have access to them. Start working through the shlokas first.

Thanks Bibhas for starting off such a wonderful thread. I honestly and sincerely believe almost all Indian languages can be learnt if one has even a basic rudimentary grasp on Sanskrit (and of course patience and 'driving force' to learn that particular language ).
I'm no expert on Sanskrit and whatever Sanskrit I understand is based on the Subhashitmaalas in school and understanding the meaning of the various Shlokas I know by-heart.
I still dont see our linguist here .. Mandrake ? (Wont be surprised if he's spent sometime learning Sanskrit too !)

By nature, the trio of mother, friends and father (worry about your) welfare.

kAryakAraNataschAnyE --- kArya-kAraNatah + cha + anyE
kArya-kAraNatah = (own) work (and) reason / personal benefits
anyE = others
bhavanti = become
hitabuddhayah = make-believe / feign (your) welfare (any sandhi here ? )

For their own personal needs, others feign being your well-wishers

Although translations would be widely available, lemme try and give meanings for individual words:

dhyAyato --- dhyAyatah = (he/she) concentrates
vishhayAn - has a deeper meaning ... I think it means 'wordly objects'
pumsah - person
sangastEshhUpajAyatE --- sangah + tEshhu + upajAyatE
sangah = association
teshhu = among / with them
upajAyatE - arises / starts
(when) a person concentrates on 'wordly objects', he starts associating with them

sangAt = from association
sanjAyatE = arises / springs forth
kAmah = desire
kAmAt = from desire
krOdhObhijAyatE --- krOdhah + abhijAyatE
krOdhah = anger (also means sorrw here, I suppose )
abhijAyatE = arises
From association, springs forth desire (and) from desire arises anger

krOdhAt = from anger
bhavati = exists (from)
sammOhah = delusion
sammOhAt = from delusion
smRtivibhramah = forgetfullness (forgetting whats right and wrong)
Delusion exists (due to) anger (and) from delusion (arises) forgetfulness

smRtibhramshAt = from forgetfullness
budhhinAshah = total loss (of) intellect / wisdom
buddhinAshAt = from loss (of) wisdom
praNashyati = utter destruction
Forgetfullnes leads to loss of wisdom (and) loss of wisdom spells utter destruction

Enjoy it. I am enjoying reading all the translations (Dhanyosmi Vivekah) too. Though I knew the general meaning of the shlokas, it helps to see the sandhis broken down and roots displayed. Bhautika shAstrAdhyayanam karishyAmi, Me on a short break to learn physics before I tackle Sankrit.
