Full Version: Geetaji's Personal Favourites

Hi freinds

here is an excerpt which these were geetaji's favourites as mentioned by her only in 1957.though her most of the good works came later.

In early 1957 while selecting the ten best songs that she has sung, Geeta Dutt mentioned

' People have a complex that successful film songs are not necessary the best. I beg to differ. If a song catches public fancy it could only be because of all round perfection in all departments - in its music, in its writing, in its singing. Should I then list my ten best songs or my ten most popular songs? The dividing line, I feel is very thin. The songs that have stood the test of public approval and the songs that have personally appealed to me are the same. '

The ten songs she selected then represented definite landmarks in her singing career. They are:

'Mat ja mat ja jogi' (Jogan - 1950 ) This was her own personal favourite.
'Mera sundar sapna beet gaya' (Do Bhai - 1947 )
'Na yeh chand hoga' (Shart - 1954 )
'Tadbir se bigdi hui taqdeer' (Baazi - 1951 )
'Yeh lo main hari piya' (Aar Paar - 1954 )
'Khayalon mein kisike' (Baawre Nain - 1950 ) with Mukesh
'Aaj sajan mohe ang laga lo' (Pyaasa - 1957 )
'Jaane kya tunhe kahi' (Pyaasa - 1957 )
'Ae dil mujhe bata de' (Bhai Bhai - 1956 )
'Hai yeh duniya kaunsi' (Sailaab - 1956 )

This as mentioned was in early 1957. Citing the reason for her selections Geeta mentioned:

' I feel that a song must express human emotions in simple language and in a tune that affords the singer sufficient scope to do full justice to the thought underlying the lyric. I
feel that the songs I have listed are simple enough to be appreciated by people of all ages at all times.'

Some of Geeta's best work for e.g. 'Waqt ne kiya kya haseen sitam' from Kaagaz ke Phool(1959), 'Chale aao, chale aao' from Sahib Bibi aur Ghulam (1962) and the songs of Anubhav (1971) were to come later and naturally they do not find a place in that list.

Ashish,
Baazi and Pyaasa are Sahir Lyrics too. It was after Pyaasa that Guru Dutt and SDB developed a strained relation with Sahir Ludhianvi......that is why he could not convince Sahir and SDB to work together on Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam in 1962 and was forced to turn to Shakeel Badayuni-Hemant Kumar combination.....
Like his friend Dev Anand, Guru dutt only preferred SDBurman and OP was secondary to him----and Geeta Dutt introduced him to OP after Burman Dada refused to compose for BAAZ...

Dear Ashish, many thanks for your kind words about our beloved singer. I am myself looking for movie clippings and radio jingles of her. In one of the posts Bawra Jay had mentioned that he had some of them. I am still waiting to hear anything from Jay ji. Tried sending him a PM but looks like his mail box is full.

Let us hope one day we find those rare clippings.

Only ten songs! Yeh Zulm Hai!

Anyways, an attempt must be made. Trying to choose ten songs not in any order. I'll assume we have to choose her solos.

(a) Aaj Sajan Mohe Ang Laga Lo - Pyasa
( b ) Thandi Hawa Kali Ghata - Mr and Mrs 55
( c ) Mujhe Huzoor Tumse Pyar Hai - Son Of India
(d) Jaago Jaago Savera Hua - Baaz
(e) Tadbir Se Bigdi Hui Taqdeer Bana le - Baazi
(f) Yeh Rut Yeh Raat Jawaan - Sailaab
(g) Unse Kehna Ki Pal Bhar Ke Liye Aa Jaayen - Ek Thi Ladki
(h) Aye Dil Mujhe Bata De - Bhai Bhai
(i) Ban Dhadkan Kajraare Naina - Miss Coca Cola
(j) Le Ja Le Ja Babu Meri Nishani - Darogaji

Hope you all like my choice.

Also rans which I removed with great difficulty
Waqt Ne Kiya Kya Haseen Sitam - Kagaz Ke Phool
Koi Chupke Se Aake - Anubhav
Chale Aao - Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam
Tumse Nazar Mili - Jagir
Gend Kheloon - Jogan
frangipani
I must start off with the disclaimer that I am awful with lists, it's entirely possible that after two weeks, I would disown my own list. biggrin.gif And for me, it is entirely impossible to compile a GD song list without including her Bangla songs, which knocks out some more popular Hindi ones... but that's a trade-off I have to make. So my list (at this point), in no particular order (except that the first one is my most favourite song, ever!), is:

1. nishiraat bnaakaa chaand
2. mujhe jaan naa kaho
3. bulbul mere chaman ke
4. machal ke dil kahe mera
5. naa jaao saiyaan chhuraake
6. ei shundor swarnali shondhyaay
7. aaj sajan mohe ang lagale
8. hum se bhi karlo
9. aaoge naa saajan aaoge naa
10. nanhi kali sone chali

EDIT: We have to write MDs. too?

Faraaj ji

Seeing you here in Geeta ji's forum after a very long time. Hope you are doing good.

Great selection of songs, just one correction. The Sujata song is by Asha ji!

There are a few songs of Asha ji (specially for Burmanda) where she sounds so close to Geeta ji. Another example where a lot of people get confused is "Aaja panchhi akela hain".
