We all would have seen the ad page that pops up every once in-a-while on HF (and many other sites) that stays up for 10 seconds or so, and has a button to skip it rather than waiting for it. I am wondering how this is done. Each time that page shows up, the link is from a server different than the host that you are visiting. I would like to know the technical details behind this, how this is done, where are the Ad pages stored (which server) and how they are served.

Thanks in advance

Such are called Interstitials ads. The page loads the Interstitials JS Script, which is provided by the ad agency. The JS script monitors when the user clicks on a link and triggers itself based on some random timing value. The script remembers the link address on which the user has clicked and redirect to it after certain time interval.
