Full Version: With Lata-bai

'aye dil kahaan teri manzil' from 'maya'. 95% of the song is sung by Dwijen Mukherjee. The story goes that one lead violin player was missing on the day of the recording. Salil-babu's genius took over and he had Lata-bai (who was present there) to substitute for the high pitched violin movements). The end result is so stunning that one is left with open jaws.

Lata-bai's effort can give an inferiority complex to a professional soprano.

A divine number from the movie 'awaaz' (1955). Salil-babu broke away from the 'lorie-tradition' in two ways. First, he used short phrases unlike other lories like 'dheere se aaja re ankhiyan mein' or 'nanhi kali soney chali hawa dheere aana' or 'neend pari lorie gaaye' (Salil-babu himself). Secondly, from the 3rd stanza, the song jumps to a high pitch, unlike lories which do not have much of a variance in the range of notes used in the song.

However, even after using the high pitch phrases, the essence of the song remains soothing, calming, and comforting.

And as for the lyrics (I think it is Shailendra), they almost bring tears.

Lata-bai has put her heart and soul in this song.

A beautiful bhajan 'jaagiye gopala' (based on raag durga) from the movie 'jawaahar' (1960). Lyrics by Prem Dhawan.

A super soft number 'haay jhilmil' from 'laal batti' (1957). Lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

A beautiful number 'aha re magan' from 'honeymoon' (1060). Lyrics by Shailendra.

A classy number 'ankhon mein kaajal' from 'jhoola' (1962). Once again, note the gorgeous prelude in western symphony style which seamlessly blends into the song that has traces of indian classical music in it. (The 1st & 2nd lines are based on raags hamir & kedar respectively).

A lovely song 'bole pihu pihu papihara' from 'ek gaon ki kahani' (1957). Lyrics by Shailendra. Superb rendition by Lata-bai.

Hope you like the numbers.

Almost one a half decades after the above 5 gems, the Lata-Salil team are as dazzling as ever.

This song from Anokha Daan is one of sheer beauty. Salil-babu, the genius, still remains the king of harmony, orchestration, preludes, interludes and sudden but beautiful twists & turns in his music.

Lyrics by Gulzar.

Now *this* is very interesting indeed - in the recording I have of this song, the words differ significantly from the version you have uploaded! The version I have has the following mukhadaa:

naam meraa nimmo mukaam ludhiyaanaa
sang liye doloon main pyaar kaa khazaanaa
ho rahoongi teri laa dil nazaraanaa
yoon hi re yoon hi tu mat lalachaanaa

The version you have uploaded goes:

naam meraa nimmo makaam ludhiyaanaa
sang liye doloon main pyaar kaa *taraanaa*
*de chuki hoon baalam ko* dil nazaraanaa
*yahi re yahi hai meraa Thikaanaa*

In the first stanza, again, the first line in my version goes:

o dekh dekh zaalim na ab tarasaa
dil na jalaa dil na jalaa
are main ne tujhe chaahaa kyaa yah bhii hai khataa
sach batalaa batalaa
aadat hain mardon ki pichhe pad jaanaa
jhooth mooth karate hain pyaar kaa bahaanaa

While your version has:

o dekh dekh *nimmo* na ab *bharamaa*
...
aadat hain mardon ki *batiyaan banaanaa*
...

What gives?? Does the movie have the song twice? Or is one of these two a 'cover version'? My version indubitably has Lata, while the version you have uploaded also - to my ears - has Lata.

The song "Jhun jhunjhunaa" is based on the famous bengali song "Ghoom aay re aay" first recorded by Protima Bandopaddhaay in 1955. This song was performed by the IPTA delegation with dance in Geneva during the ILO conference in 1952.
Salil used both parts of this song to compose two others. He composed "Aaa jaa re aa nindiyaa to aa" based on the slow part for the film "Do Bigha Zameen" and composed "Jhun jhun jhunaa" based on the fast part.

Often songs would be re-recorded since the censors object to something
in the lyrics. Maybe they thought "lalchaana" and "peechhe paDna" were
too risque. Who knows.
THe version that was uploaded is the one that I know, but then again, I
have not paid that much attention to the lyrics on this song.
Would love to hear your version. Please upload as T-ji requested.

A similar situation was true in the song "Mai soya akhiyaN meeche" in the
film "Phagun". There is a line "Mai soyi akhiyaN meeche teri baahoN ke
neeche". That was considered unacceptable and in the film, it is replaced
with this horrible screechy instrument playing the tune. It was almost as
if OPN or who-ever did it in protest.

Talaikya
Archie ji,
That was a wonderful treat. I hadn't heard any except the Anokha Daan number. Not surprisingly, none are available with SaReGaMa, and they do have other numbers from Anokha Daan! Now the hunt for CD able versions begins. Till then, I will continue to enjoy your uploads. Thank you. bow.gif

First of all thanx for all these lovely songs. It was fun to hear them again. WHile
I have them, it is still nice to get mp3 versions.
About this song, I don't think the voice is Lata's at all. I think it is Sabita.
Lata's voice at higher pitches is much thinner like you hear in the KK/Lata duet
in "Half ticket". This sounds more like Sabita.

Dear Mr. Sangeetbhakt,

I think it is Lata. Firstly, it sounds (to my ears) like her voice and secondly, Mr. Gautam Chowdhury (owner of the site www.salilda.com) had told me of it. Gautam-da is an authority on Salil-babu and used to know him personally.

I had also uploaded some Asha-tai numbers (courtesy Gautam-da) on:

Dear Mr. Abhay,

Apologies for a late response. Many thanks for this 'different' version of 'naam mera nimmo'. I had got mine from Mr. Gautam Chowdhury who insists that the 78 rpm record of the song and the VHS version which he has are the same.

Where did you get this version from? A film version? An EP (45 rpm) record? A 78 rpm record?

Awaiting your answer.

Hi Abhay,

Can you please tell me the source of your version of "naam mera nimmu" ? Is it recorded from an EP or a 78rpm record ? If its an EP can you please share the record number ?
As you rightly said, the lyrics in your version is different to the version on the film.
I don't have the 78rpm record so I can't really compare.

Thanks.

Gautam, my apologies for the delay in responding - was not checking HF for a few days.

I have no idea of the origin of the version I have. I have the song on a cassette my sister gave me; she in turn copied it from a cassette made for her by someone in Pimpri (near Pune). The cassette has some delightful numbers: two from "Sapan Suhane" (this one and "gori aajaa gaDDi vich baiTh jaa"), a whole lot from "Ham Hain Raahi Pyaar Ke", a whole lot from "Garam Coat" (MDed by Amarnath), and so on. The quality of the recording of "naam meraa nimmo" makes me suspect it's off a 78 rpm.

Will try to find more details, but that may take time.

Oh boy oh boy oh boy oh boy. Did you say "Garam coat"???? I am salivating
at the thought of listening to songs from that film. The only one I have heard
is the ethereal "Jogiya se preet kiye dukh hoy". The film has at least 4 other
Lata solos and if they are half as good as this one, they would be well worth
listening to.
I don't know much about "Hum haiN raahi pyaar ke" except that it has music
by Khayyam and it is from the 60s. It was an unreleased film from the 60s
with songs by Lata and Talat.

Abhay,

Thanks a lot for your reply.
Actually, I did manage to get hold of a 78rpm recording of "naam mera nimmu" and its of good quality. Strangely enough the other song "Nazar se mil gayee nazar" from "Sapan Suhaane" also has two versions. The version in the film which perfectly synchronizes with the dance sequence sounds a bit strange. It sounds as if the antara ends abruptly before returning to the mukhda. As soon as I heard the 78rpm version it became clear that the antara is much extended and the return to mukhda sounds just perfect !
I have no idea why that extra bit of antara was removed in the film sequence!

Quality is secondary. With a lot of the older Hindi music, it is hard to get

Reviving this thread with an unusual number composed by Salil Da - sung by Lata with a Canine for accompaniment!!
"Beta Wauw Wauw, Mere Kaan Mat Khao", a pretty peppy wetsernized beat number.
From Mem Didi (1961), lyrics Shailendra. I believe the film starred Tanuja (probably the voice at the beginning, sounded a bit like Kajol too)!
I can't recall where I got it from, maybe from the Salilda site itself.
Enjoy.
