FACTS I KNOW ABOUT GEETA DUTT:
(I have read/heard; I will keep adding if I find something)
1.)Born: 26th November, 1930 Father: Debendranath Roy Choudhury.
Brothers: Mukul Roy, Kanu Roy (both music directors)and someone (cannot remember his name, the youngest one, an (chemical or civil?) engineer) I spoke to in 1998, who lives in Arkansas, US.
There are more siblings---I don't know the names.
2.) She was the eldest daughter and was called "Ranga di" (Ranga is a better word for Red).
3.) She passed away on 7th July, 1972.
4.) Tarun Dutt wrote in an article in "Cine Blitz" titled "Was Guru Dutt Murdered?" that he thought his father's death was not a suicide. Infact he claims that people high up in Bombay Film industry were involved. Boxes of equipments simply vanished from the Guru Dutt Pvt. Ltd. studio overnight. Geeta Dutt had to sell all her jewellery and try to get out of debt. In the same article he says that his grandmother (Guru Dutt's mother) never really liked her and wanted Guru Dutt to pursue Waheeda Rehman. But in his mind Guru Dutt could not think of a second affair/marriage.In fact it is true he says, that Geeta Dutt and Mala Sinha were the only two people that Guru Dutt spoke to over the telephone the previous night of his demise. They (The Dutts) were thinking of giving their marriage a second try for the sake of the kids; the other person who he spoke to was Mala Sinha (who was then starring in Bahren Phir Bhi Aayegi about next days plans). Tarun Dutt thus raises the question "How can a person who was looking forward to all this commit suicide?"
(Can anyone find the article: It was in the 1980s (maybe late 80s)**
Tarun Dutt (eldest son) committed suicide later in 1980s, there was an article also in one of the well known magazines. The room where he was found contained all scattered pictures of Guru and Geeta Dutt and family pics.
5.) Someone who lived in the Santa Cruz mansion area, were Geeta Dutt spent her last days told me that she used to have a lot of wrangling with the servants as they complained that they got paid irregularly. At the same time a person who is close to Geeta Dutt's younger brother (referred to above) told me that her side of the family did not know anything or have any idea of Geeta was going through!!
6.) Another lady who was an audience in one of Geeta Dutt's stage shows (could be Delhi or Calcutta---I did not ask her) recalls how she could not continue singing and passed out and fell over the harmonium as she was intoxicated. Tarun Dutt writes in the abovementioned article that Geeta Dutt was reduced to performing stage shows to support them as her offers were greatly marginalized.
7.) Hemant Kumar mentioned in a Bengali article that Geeta was not available for rehearsals etc. due to her personal life problems.
8.) Geeta did call O.P. Nayyar and asked him, "Why don't you call me anymore?" (for recording). O.P. gave all the solos of Howrah Bridge to Asha and only one "Meraa Naam Chin Chin Choo" to Geeta.
9.) Another person, my next door neighbour in Calcutta , Late Asit Roy Choudhury (distantly related to the Geeta's family side) recalls that once when Geeta and Lata were staying at Hemanta Mukherjee's house in Bhawanipore area, after luch laid beside each other embracing each other like sisters. Hemanta called the teenagers and showed them what they were upto.
10.) V.K. Murthy (Guru Dutt's cameraman) says "One day, his wife and children left him and went to her place. He sold his house and shifted in a rented house at Peddar Road. But one cannot blame Geeta Dutt for walking out.
