"Astonishingly beautiful" is the perfect description for this duet of Manna & Lata.  clap1.gif

I was familiar with the melody, since Salil-da has used it for a tandem tune in Malayalam, sung by Yesudas and S. Janaki.

What a great pity that fans of HFM did not get to hear this gorgeous song since the film was not released. We at HF are indeed privileged to have access to it.

Thanks Archie, for this superb number. bow.gif

Unni bhai yeh konsa song hai aur kis film se hai ?

A beautiful bengali song ('shono kono ekdin') by Hemanta Mukherjee in the late 60's. Beautiful lyrics (by Salil-babu himself) and of course, a stunning tune.

Note how subtly the song progressively changes chords. Showcases the range of Hemanta-babu's glorious voice.

Another song ('poth harabo') by the same artist in the late 50's. Again, the lyrics are by Salil-babu. This is one of the most popular bengali songs of all time.

Interestingly, Salil-da, in a bengali film 'Pratigya', made Yesudas sing the same song in the mid 80's. The song, though very well rendered, did not make waves as the superb lyrics lost it's way in Yesudas' (understandably) flawed pronunciation.

Can any kind-hearted soul upload this bengali song of Yesudas?

Regards-Archie.

Dont forget.. even RD was inspired by Salil babu's style (never acknowledged by Asha, though she herself used to greet Salil babu with the lines 'Asha iss chamatkaar to namaskaar karti hai). Though IMHO, RD's control over beats was IMHO, better..and definitely much more uncluttered.

And yes, Salil babu was the doyen amongst composers, no doubt.... it'll take us a few more births tofathom his greatness

QUOTE(archimoz @ Mar 18 2005, 12:55 PM)
An astonishingly beautiful duet of Manna & Lata from the unreleased movie 'Sangat' (1975). Lyrics by Jan Nisar Akhtar.

I'm yet to hear a better non-conventional bhajan (or should one call it 'an ode to the Almighty'?) than this, both in tune & wordings.

Though the basic fabric of the song is in raag bhairavi, Salil-babu, the genius that he is, has woven in beautiful harmonisation of chords, both in the interlude pieces as well as during the two singers' humming pieces.

The unconventional lyrics by Jan Nisar Akhtar throws light on how Javed Akhtar can also pen great lyrics like 'o palan-haare' (in Lagaan).

And as for Lata & Manna, they are gifts of the Almighty to us, hindi film song lovers.

Request you to share this song with your friends and propagate the super-talents of a composer, who perhaps did not get his due in Bollywood. Surely ahead of his times. Even now, his orchestration & composition seem ahead of today's successful composers.

No wonder, composers like Illayaraja, Hridaynath Mangeshkar, A R Rehman never fail to mention Salil-babu's name when talking about their inspirations.

Regards-Archie.

Thanks, Sri,

Apologies for responding so late. Yes, I like Salil-babu's music immensely & a few interactions with Gautam-da (Mr. Gautam Chowdhury of www.salilda.com fame) has only fuelled it further.

Do keep on sharing thoughts & songs. (I've also become your admirer because of your passion for Kishore Kumar's songs of the 50-s & 60-s!)

On the Salil-babu & Kishore Kumar front, would you be having the songs 'mone pode shei shob din' & 'o amaar shajani go' (with Lata) from Swarnatrishna/Antarghat?

I'll be highly obliged if any member can upload these two gems of the late 70-s.

Regards-Archie.

Hi Archie, You are absolutley right about Mukeshji's voice quality. Very catch tunes.
Can you translate the lyrics for Mukesh fans who don't speak Bengali.

I think Mukesh - Salil C. had great chemistry and always came up with great songs.

Dear Ramesh,

Please give me a few days for the translation.

Meanwhile, a response to a request in a different thread (regional music - bengali).

Hemanta-babu's voice & rendering is like a dream in this song. The tune is brilliant with subtle chord changes which only a genius like Salil-babu could have conceived.

I do not have this gem, though it is easily available. (I have it in a cassette format though). The starting lines are:

uthaali pathaali amaar buuk
o amaar mone-te naai shukh re
amaay dubaaili re, amaay bhashaaili re
akul dariyaar bujhi kuul naai re.....

Absolutely mind-boggling rendition. Beyond compare.

Dear Mr. Fiftysomeone,
You are absolutely right . "ganga aaye kahan se" sung by Hemant Kumar in "Kabuliwala" is the hindi version of the bengali song "aamay dubaili re...aamay bhashai li re" sung by Manna De in the bengali film "Ganga" released in 1960.
This song "ganga ganga r toronge" sung by Sabita Chowdhury in the same film "Ganga" has a hindi version "Ho Ho Ganga ki bhaari god me" sung by Manna de in the film "Mere Aapne".Do any one have this hindi version?
