The government has embarked on a programme to restore, digitally as well as conventionally, rare movies lying in its archives, parliament was informed on Monday.
"The Films Division has more than 8,000 films, including some rare documentary films," Information and Broadcasting Minister S Jaipal Reddy said in a written reply in the Rajya Sabha.
"The original celluloid format of most precious films will be transferred to the vaults of National Film Archives of India in Pune for their safe preservation away from Mumbai's humidity and salinity," he said.
They would be restored both in conventional as well as digital formats and transferred in high definition and digibeta tapes for preservation.
