(Ashaji's voice has such rasa, so much sex that anyone listening to her voice would think that she herself is very sexy and beautiful. And she is beautiful. Her voice is 100 % gold.)

(My lovely little sister Asha. As time passes by, the magic of her voice becomes more difficult to decribe. She is very simple, once I made her listen to a song which was sung by someone else {is it a veiled reference to big sister and MM's favourite Lata didi, I don't know} after hearing it she started crying like a child. The beauty/elegance of her voice keeps on increasing year after year.

(These days one gets bored of anything very quickly, but Ashaji's voice has remained interesting for the past 25 years. She has a clean/pure heart.)

Husn ke laakhon rang...

S D Burman: Maine jab bhii koii dhun sunaai...umhein bahut jaldii yaad ho gaii...har tarah ke giit gaa saktii hai.N. voice control aisaa ki gaane kii ek hii line me.N husky voice hotii hai aur zor se chillaa bhii saktii hai. Mere ek gaane mein unkaa zabardast voice control sunaataa hoo.N
( Whenever I gave her a tune she mastered it in no time {charmingly in a heavy Bangla accent he pronounces jaldii as zaldii}. She can sing every type of songs. She has such great control over her voice that in the same line of a song she can switch from a husky voice to a high pitched one. Listen to her tremendous voice control in one of my songs)

meraa pahlaa cabaret gaanaa thaa...unkii khaas baat thii ki rehearsal mein bulaate the aur mukhRaa banaate the phir 2-3 tarah se gaate the...phir kahte the...apnii tarah gaao... agar unhe.N achchha nahiin lagtaa thaa...to kahte the...dhat ye kyaa hai...achchhaa lagtaa thaa to kahte the... waah. koshish karte the ki kuchh alag ho ham log bhii koshish karte the ki gaane me.N kuchh harkat dein...unke gaane suniye to maine koshish kee hai ki har gaanaa alag harkat de kar khatm karoo.N ye ek cheez unse seekhee
(this was my first cabaret song. {Khaiyam saab in his interview to Ameen Sayani had said that Asha B had sung her first cabaret song for him. He even played that song, but my memory fails as to what song that was- Asad} his speciality was that during the rehearsals he used to compose the mukhRa and then sing it in 2 or 3 different styles...then he asked us to sing it in our styles. We used to try if he didn't like it he said "dhat...what is this? if he liked it he praised it. We used to try different things...different harkats. If you listen to my songs in under him you will notice that I tried to end all my songs differently. This is something which he taught me.)

( He was a little moody, for chhoR do aa.Nchal song I was not able to say "ah" in the beginning properly. He used to chide me how come you can't say it, you should be able to say even the "father" of this! I pleaded Dada I can't say it, so he said "imagine if Bhosle saab catches hold of your pallu then how will you say it. So he had a way of explaining these situations with instances like these.)

(The first time a song featured laughter was in jaanu jaanuu rii. when you lagh you exhale and this was done for the first time by him. later others too tried it. He was always trying out new things)

(OP Nayyar is a unique MD. His first film was Aasmaan. He was also giving music for Chham chhamaa chham. For CCC he called me to sing {sings} aa pardesii baalmaa more a.Ngnaa, the song was something like that...i've forgotten...it's been so many years now.{ she sounded so wistful especially in the last sentence. Ameen Bhai had said that three MDs had a large part to play in her career the first one was SDB...and the last RDB but tell us about the middle one OPN)

(Then I sang a lot of songs for him, after Naya Daur my name zoomed to the top)

merii aawaaz kii khaas baat unhone pahchaan lii thii ki oonchaa nahiin gavaanaa...neeche sur mein gaauun to merii aavaaz gol aur achchii lagtii hai...vo gaayak kii aavaaz samajh ke gaanaa gavaate the...mere khayaal se mujhe life mein jo naam milaa vo OPN saab kii vajah se.
(He had recognised the uniqueness of my voice that I should not be made to sing in a high pitch. In a low pitched song my voice sounds rounded, he always understood the voice of a singer and then gave him/her the songs. I think OP Nayyar is responsible for the fame I achieved.)

( We have been taught from childhood that elder sister is like a mother, one should give her the same respect. No one of the siblings ever answers back to her. SHe is 4 years my elder. {AS asks if there was no jealousy?} There was no jealousy, when we sang duets there was healthy competition between us...at least healthy competition from my side.{now this one is open to interpretation!!} I had married against her wish, and agaisnt the wish of my whole family, that barrier broke in '60. Now we stay in the same building, she has two flats I have one, there is a door in between and we stay as one happy family. Our likes and dislikes may be different. She likes white while I like pink, but there is no enmity between us.)

(I like her style, but if I too sang like her then no one would have listened to me. That's why i brought a little western touch to my singing)

(Praising her is like putting a lamp in front of the sun. She loses her temper quickly, but becomes cool as quickly.)

Here's my feeble attempt at transcribing and translating the first part of her interview. The second one will be aired at 9:00 PM on Friday. I might not be able to transcribe it, so if anyone else could do that it will be great. Any additions to this one are also welcome.

That song now I remember was Aa raa raa ram....suhaanaa hai ye mausamm salonaa meraa baalam from Footpath (1953) Taxi Driver (1954) came later. So Khaiyam saab was right after all!
