Shankar Jaikishan , one of the most common names among top most duo music directors. They used work out on each film quite unusual manner . Shankar was born in
punjab and later moved to Hyderabad . He was classically trained . They used to compose music individually . For most of the music of Shankar Sahab , Shailendra ji used to write down the song and for the Jaikishan ji's music Hasrat Jaipuri Sahab with a few exeptions for both . For most of the songs Shankar sahab used to arrange music as earlier Shankar Sahab used to work as music arranger in prior entering into music industry . I don't have any idea that whether Shankar Sahab has done any music arranging work in " Music Industry " . So friends by looking down into the lyrics of the song you people could find out that whose composition that concerned song was composed specifically !!
Shankar - Jaikishan
Before Raj Kapoor made Barsaat in 1948, he decided to give a face-lift to his production team and introduced some fresh talent. Two such youngsters who found their first break and went on to make unforgettable music for a good many Raj Kapoor films as well as many more in the next two decades were Shankar and Jaikishan.
Shankar Singh hailed from Hyderabad and Jaikishan came to Bombay from a small Gujarat town. They started work as small time musicians, before they scored the music of Barsaat, which brought them instant fame.
They continued to compose music for Raj Kapoor's films and in 1951, Awara brought them their share of international recognition with the tunes of Awara Hoon gaining mammoth popularity in USSR and the Middle East. Thereafter, with every hit that they delivered, the duo proved that they had the ability to determine the musical preferences of the layman.
It is not surprising that they went on to win nine Filmfare awards in a two-decade long career when they recorded close to 280 films. They entered the arena of Hindi film music, when the scene was dominated by the likes of S.D. Burman, Naushad, Madan Mohan et al.
This did not deter them from making music, which is versatile as it is unmatched. From purely classical tunes to those with a visible Western tinge, they composed them all. They composed music keeping in mind the lead star cast which contributed to the perfect rendering of tunes in the film. The infallible combination of Raj Kapoor, Mukesh and Shankar-Jaikishan had come to be known as a sure fire formula for the musical success of a film in those days.
Shankar-Jaikishan's personal success incidentally came from the music that they composed for most of Raj Kapoor's hits. These included Barsat, Aah, Boot Polish, Shri 420, Chori Chori, Anari, Jis Desh Mein Ganga Behti Hai, Sangam, Tesri Kasam, and Mera Naam Joker. With the passing away of Jaikishan, a musical era ended which had held ardent fans in raptures for long.

This part of the forum is an excellent place to discuss about SJ's life, work and career. They ruled the music scene for a very long time and many many future music directors were inspired from their work. Their music continues to live on in the hearts of fans across the globe. Jai was possibly the most naturally talented composer the industry has ever seen, not only having a natural flair for composing such beautiful melodies, but also composing excellent background music (he was probably the best in the industry at this too). Shankar was no less a composer, a gifted musician himself, he composed excellent songs as well. Its nice to see SJ fans here

Padmanabhji "Aapnu swagat chhe aa forum ma". I think this forum is still unknown to other members & that might be the reason that no one has so far acknowledged your post. I am aware about you through your posts on Meri Awaz Suno - the earlier version of this forum as also, if I remember correct, also on separate forum on Shanker Jaikishan.
I am sure it would be really interesting to know varied information and aspects of great music duo Shanker Jaikishan from your vast treasure on the subject.
Welcome once again.

Wow Padmanabh, that must have been an excellent experience going to SJ recordings.
Please shed more light, what songs recording did you attend, who were the singers, how did SJ graph the songs out, who arranged the music and rehearsed the singers etc??
If I ever had a wish it would be to attend live recordings of SJ, LP, RDB & KA.
One final question will the SJ musical biography be available in English too?

I think staring a thread in SKS-would be the best where we can u/l-request-
all artist -with songs, articles personal experiences,photpgraphs..etc
we can have experts like padmanabhji, ashok parekh contributing.
let's go for it.

Just one thought:
Unlike other composer-duos where one member was the 'senior partner', Shankar and Jaikishen were of equal stature. Each of them was a full-fledged composer in his own right.
It might not be
entirely true that Kalyanji and Lakshmikant composed the tunes and their respective partners only did the "arranging". Perhaps the latter also did make tunes. Yet it was accepted that one member of the duo was predominant.
I don't know if this is true at all, but why does it seems to me that after their initial years with RK, Shankar composed the serious/sad songs and Jaikishen the lighter/happy ones? Does this 'perception' have to do with their respective personalities as seen in their photographs?

I wonder.

From what I have read and heard from various sources, there was a pact between Shankar & Jaikishan that S would compose the title songs and folk songs as well as handle most of the classical compositions, and J would compose the lighter and romantic songs - both happy and sad, besides taking care of the background music. Both composers though, were masters at each others domain and hence we have songs composed by both of them of different kinds.
