Madam C, that other song is one fine example of Talat sahab's underrated ability to infuse warmth & romance into a song.

Now to the rescuing part ...

Song: Keh Rahi Hain Dhadkane Pukaar
Singer: Talat, Geeta
Film: Laal Pari
M.D: Hansraj Behl
Lyrics: Asad Bhopali
Duration: 3:17

Kahin aisa na ho paaun mere tharra jayein
Aur teri marmari baahon ka sahaara na milay
Ashk behtay rahain khamosh siyaah raaton mein
Aur tere raeshmi aanchal ka kinaara na milay

Sorry for being off the scene & not being able to experience the pleasure of seeing another Talat fan being born in this corner of the woods.

Madam C, you are forgiven, conditions apply, will write soon. wink2.gif

YM, please find lyrics for this song here. HF- Lyrics Section

For me, the haunting melody of 'Meri Yaad Mein Tum Na Aansuu Bahaana' from Madhosh, created by the young musical genius Madan Mohan from 1951, has to be the first from the tragic songs genre attributed to Talat sahab, which leaves one yearning for more of this velvet voice. If 'Meri Yaad Mein' was the milestone marking the advent of a new age for the Indian Film Music in the name of Madan Mohan. Then 'Teri Aankh Ke Aansuu Pee Jaun' from Jahan Ara in 1964 would have to be the culmination of two geniuses growing individually & collectively, having enthused life & magic onto the silverscreen.

To discover a song of such proportions, serendipitously, is indeed uncanny. Yet you have somehow stumbled onto something of gargantuan proportions, even by a Rafi fan's standards. So, I would warmly welcome you with a warm embrace into that very select group of Talat lovers that this corner of HF provides us with.
Experiencing Talat & his magic for the very first time is undescribable. You have to make a few more discoveries in your own time. We can only recommend, if you would like us to. Enjoying it & appreciating is what you'll have to achieve on your own.

On the topic of Talat Mehmood and Madan Mohan...............

The best part of the Veer-Zaara double CD is CD no. 2 which actually takes us through the process of how the music was evovled. It demonstrates very effectively how the raw tunes of Madan Mohan have been developed to give us some memorable music. Listening to Madan Mohan actually singing those tunes I got the feeling as if many of these were most suitable for the voice of Talat Mehmood and would have created history in Talat's voice just like the "meri yaad mein" and " teri aakh ke aansu" mentioned in the previous post.

Although Udit and Nigam have rendered " mein Yahaan" and " Do pal ruka khwabon ka karava" Talat would have taken them to a different level. Both these songs have the potential of becoming all time classics!

Mohd bhai, would you have the few lines Talatsaab hummed in Devdas, which went like "Kisko Pata Thha, Kisko Khaba Thhi, Aise Bhi Din Aayenge... Jeena Bhi Mushkil Hoga, Marne Bhi Na Payenge..."
Would be grateful if somebody could upload this...
extenok
I think I've those lines. They were uploaded at his official website. Let me rummage through my unorganized CD collection and get back to you with that, along with the cries of 'Roko, Gaarhi Waalay, Gaarhi Roko ... ... Devdaas ... Devdaas ... "
extenok
From the film soundtrack, yet not too clear.
Would anyone agree with me that this puts to shame all those stupor-filled songs sung by many a singers of today ... trying to imitate Rafi sahab's style ... and in their craze over-looking such a magnificent rendition by Talat sahab.
Amazing little gem from 1955, tucked away for us.

And something interesting on Devdas that I found while searching for the year of release.
QUOTE
When Bimal Roy (the photographer of 'Devdas' later turned director) decided to do the remake of the film his obvious choice fell on the tragedian Dilip Kumar. Dilip Kumar, hesitant to risk comparison with Saigal, was eventually prevailed upon to act. Bimal Roy's 'Devdas' (1955) was technically superior and Dilip Kumar's heart felt portrayal of the tragic lover was highly praised. But his histrionics were in total contrast to Saigal's down-to-earth performance. He could not match the poignancy in Saigal's simplicity. Music director S.D.Burman being conscious of the lasting impact of Saigal songs did not pretend to match them. The songs 'Mitva mitva' and 'Kisko khabar thi' though melodious in the voice of Talat Mahmood did not, unlike Saigal songs, outlive the passage of time.

Source: RhythmInfo.com
Unni & other Talat enthusiasts, can you please comment?

Finally, the song.
Song: Kisko Khabar Thi, Kisko Yaqeen Tha, Aise Bhi Din Aayeinge
Singer: Talat Mahmood
Film: Devdas

Imran:

I've had no interest in watching the 1935 version, although I've read and heard good things about it. It would now seem very dated and the cinematic qualities 'primitive'. So, I am in no position to compare the acting performances. Recently, I did watch the 1955 version, to contrast it with the recent "DEVDAS", and I was struck by its authenticity.

Also, I am not a fan of Saigal-sahab or the singing style of those days. I can more easily relate to S. D. Burman's compositions and Talat-sahab's singing.

But, having said that, I would concede the writer's point about "outliving the passage of time".

Saigal-sahab sang only some 175 - 250 songs in his career. But he has acquired a legendary status that is unrivalled. Two of his songs from "DEVDAS" feature among the greatest classics of HFM, "Baalam Aaye Baso" and "Dukh Ke Din". Whereas Talat-sahab's songs from "DEVDAS" are perhaps regarded as just some other good ones from a bigger khazana (700+ ?).

Mitua" is a personal favourite of mine among Talat-sahab's renditions, but fans of Talat-sahab are more likely to cite other songs as his greatest numbers. Whereas Saigal-fans would invariably include 'Balam Aaye Baso".
rom
Thanks, Extenok, for so promptly fulfilling my request!
These few lines, I think, capture grief and longing perfectly. Comparing these to the efforts of current singers is unfair to Talatsaab and, perhaps to a greater extent, to them as well.
I think today's singers are not exposed to the nuances of poetry and song of masters like Talatsaab...
As for trying to ape Talatsaab, it's just as well they don't... the result could only be disastrous, because if one singer from the past was most inimitable, it was Talatsaab.

Now, though I haven't seen any of the versions of Devdas, I'd agree with Unni-ji that the 1955 one would be most compelling... And also with his views that Talat's songs from Devdas are not likely to be ranked among his greatest by his fans.

Disagree on the point of old movies. I like to watch really old movies, and love several of Saigal's songs, like Mein Kya Jaanoon Kya Jaadoo Hei, Babul Mora Naihar Chhooto Jaye, Gham Diye Mustaqil Kitna Nazuk Hei Dil, Karoon Kya Aas Niraas Bhayi, Diya Jalao, Madhukar Shaam Hamare Chor, Kaahe Ghumaan Kare, Ik Raje Ka Beta Lekar, Tadapat Beetat Din Nahin, and more.
