Mahendra Kapoor, whose voice has delighted music lovers across generations, died here this evening of a heart attack. He was 74 and is survived by wife, three daughters and a son.Family sources said he was suffering from a kidney ailment and undergoing dialysis. He had recovered from the ailment and was well.The end came suddenly at 1930 hrs and he died in his sleep, the sources added.

The Maharashtra government had recently announced the Lata Mangeshkar award for his lifetime contribution in the field of playback music. He has been sang for more then 225 films. He has given his voice for many super star like Manoj Kumar, Dharmendra, Devanand etc.

The funeral will take place tomorrow.

Very sad news. Yet another legend is gone now.

Rest in Peace, Mahendraji.

Sad to note that Mahendra Kapoor is no more.

According to reports, right from the beginning, he was a person of wealthy background. He used to visit Rafi Saab's small house of initial days in Bhendi Bazar, in his father's chauffeur-driven car and train under Rafi Saab in various facets of singing.

There was no doubt that he was a great disciple, devotee and fanatic of Rafi Saab always.

As for Rafi Saab, he used to recommend Mahendra Kapoor to MDs to the extent possible.

But, the irony of fate was that the important breakthroughs in Mahendra Kapoor's small career were also provided by Rafi Saab, by making Mahendra fill the vacuum's provided by Rafi Saab from time to time, due to circumstances.

My most favorite song of Mahendra Kapoor is from Film:Sohni Mahiwal(1958) and composed by Naushad. The song is:"Chand Chupa Aur Taare Doobe, Raat Ghazab Ki Aayi, Husn Chala Hai Ishq Se Milne Zulm Ki Badli Chhayi".

My other favorite songs of his are from Film:Gumrah(1963). 1.Aabhi Jaa Aabhi Jaa, Yeh Hawa Yeh Hawa, 2.Chalo Ek Baar Phir Se and 3. Aap Aaye To Khayalen Dil-e-Nashad Aaaya

Indeed it is a sad day. We lost a great singer. He did some of his best work for Ravi when Ravi was providing music for B.R. Films. Later on he picked up the vacuum left by Rafi Saab when OP unceremoniously disbanded Rafi Saab. May his soul rest in peace.

Thinking of mahendra kapoor always reminds me of my college days, one of my friends Iftikar was a very big fan of him

Thank U very much Mahendra Sahab......Aaa Derr Ka Ker Tujhko Seene Se Laga Lun Mein; followed by what a beautiful reply by Lata........Aati Hoon Zara Apne, Dil Ko Tho Sambha-lun Mey.......I must have heard and hummed this line a thousand times and just cant get enough of it.....superb!

Mahendra Kapoor's passing away is a sad loss to the lovers of music and a greater loss to the Rafi Sahaab's fans who in Mahendra Kapoor always found an affinity to Rafi Sahaab.

I remember that during the DHOOL KA PHOOL days, the lesser informed always mistook Mahendra Kapoor's voice to be Rafi's. Such was the sweetness of Mahendra Kapoor's voice.

Personally speaking, my most favourite song of Mahendra Kapoor happens to be LAAKHON HAIN YAHAAN DILWAALE from Kismat (O.P.Nayyar's composition). And not without a reason. During my college days I always found this song to be a number one hit among the female students whether in a college programme or on a picnic day. So much so, that even the students of other colleges would come up to our camp just to listen this song whether on a tape-recorder or live with the guitar background. Thank you Mahendra Kapoor for making my day romantic during the college days.

The other song of Mahendra Kapoor that I cherish is: DIL KARTA YAARA DILDAARA MERA DIL KARTA from HUMRAAZ, which I found would easily attract a crowd. So were the songs from GOPI: EK PADOSAN PEECHHE PA.D GAYI, and RAMCHANDRA KEH GAYE SIYA SE.

Of course, his songs from GUMRAAH in combination with Ravi and Sahir Ludhianvi are a class by themselves.

No doubt he was a really talented singer.....sad news.

My favorite songs of Mahendra Kapoor are the romantic song Tera Pyaar Ka Aasra Chaahata Hoon and the bhajan Jab Jab Dharti Pe Dharam Ghutta. He had a special talent for devotional and patriotic songs.
