I got curious about this thread when I saw the name 'Jikki' (Jikki Krishnaveni), known as the Southern Geeta Dutt!!

When I opened, I found it is a duet by Geeta and Jikki. So, I am d/ling it, more so because of Parag's reco. smile.gif

This is a South Indian film directed by S.S.Vasan. The Mds are Emani Shankara Sastry and Balakrishna. E.Shankara Shastry is an all-time great Veena exponent.

Jikki is just a singer, not an MD or a lyricist!!! smile.gif

Venkat

PS. On hearing this song fully, I came to know that there is a male voice also in addition to the two female voices of Geeta and Jikki Krishnaveni. That male voice is P.B.Srinivas.

On the whole, great many thanks to Parag for this interesting song.

Venkat ji, wah wah ! Thank you so much for visiting this post of mine and enlighteining all of us on these great artists from South India. I am really sorry for the mistakes (obviously due to lack of knowledge and relying on Earthmusic)

I have corrected my post with the correct names of MDs and added the name of the third singer Shri P. B. Srinivas ji, a great legend in his own.

By the way, there is one more duet of Geeta ji and Jikki Krishnaveni ji in this film. The song is "Aao aao kahani suno trepan (53) tresath (63) saal ki". The audio courtesy is of course my generous friend. And also there is a lovely solo of Geeta ji (Oh bairaagi banawaasi). In case any one is interested, I can upload these songs.

I believe the film Mr Sampat starred the great actor Motilal. Will be great to know more details about the film and its music.

Once again thanks to our dear Venkat ji, who just celebrated his birthday yesterday !

Venkat ji, I listened to the song several times and really Jikki ji has a very melodious voice. Its really nice to know about this "Geeta Dutt" of South.

Its amazing to see that Geeta ji has sung songs in several films which were remakes of original Tamil/Telugu films. Chandralekha, Mangala, Sansar, Mr Sampat, Patal Bhairavi, Ladki are some of the examples. This is a great example of musical harmony in our country.

Warmest Regards

Actually, it is not that Jikki's voice is exactly like Geeta's, but somewhat similar with some nasality, etc.

In fact, P.Suseela is the undisputed 'Southern Lata', S.Janaki more or less the 'Southern Asha' and then, when it comes to Southern Geeta, this Jikki comes the closest! smile.gif

I am uploading here one very nice Telugu song by Jikki Krishanveni from Film:Pelli Kanuka(1960), composed by Jikki's husband, A.M.Raja, who was a noted Singer-cum-MD in Telugu and Tamil movies.

"Pulakinchani Madi Pulakinchu, Vivnipinchani Kadha Vinipinchu Kanipinchani Aasala Ninchu"

Here it is.

Duration:04:03 (Very good audio quality)

Venkat

PS. Incidentally, this Telugu Film, Pelli Kanuka (1960) has also a Hindi Cousin--Nazraana(1961), starring Raj Kapoor and Vyjayantimala--MD:Ravi!!!

Interesting trivia about P B Srinivas. He is among the foremost singers in
the South having sung in all the Southern languages with a lovely smooth
voice. But his first song ever was in Hindi for this film - "Mr Sampath".

Well, I have not seen this Mr.Sampath film, so I do not know in what context and for which actors PBS had sung. At least in that 'Chalo Paniya Bharan Ko" song, PBS comes very briefly in the very end. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if PBS was not figuring at all in the credits for this song.

If you ignore these Mr. Sampath songs, the only next break that PBS got in Hindi was probably in 'Main Bhi Ladki Hoon' in the duet, "Chanda Se Hoga Woh Pyaara" along with Lata under Chitragupta. The reasons:

1.That was a period when Lata wouldn't sing with Rafi Saab.

2.This 'Main Bhi Ladki Hoon' is a southern Film and I think PBS had sung in the Tamil version. Hence, he must have been tried in the Hindi version too.

The tamil version of this was not by PBS, Venkat bhai.., it was by T.M.Sounderrajan with P.Susheela - original movie I think was either Telugu or Tamil (It had S.V. Ranga Rao in the patriach's role! ) - Tamil movie name - Naanum oru penn. (means the same - Main bhi ladki hoon)
simplefable
In a recent interview, PBS said that Lata when she came to know that she will be singing with this young boy...was very reluctant..but later appreciated the work of PBS. PBS has great regard for the Diva.

Did he have any songs at all in that Tamil Film, even if it is not for the Hero?

In Telugu, the "Chanda Se Hoga"'s counterpart was sung by Ghantasala and P.Suseela. But, I vaguely recall having heard that it was first recorded on PBS and P.Suseela.

None that I can recall.. Even the song for the hero's brother - Yemaara sonnathu naana enn meethu (AVM Rajan actor) was given playback by TMS.

List of songs in the movie -

Yemaara sonnathu naana - Susheela

Yemaara sonnathu naana - TMS

Kannukkul sikki konda pennin perai sollava - TMS

Kanna karumai neera kanna unnai - Susheela

Poo pola poo pola pirakkum - TMS, Susheela

The first song of P B Srinivas was Jagah Nahin Jagah nahin(this was the first line he utters in the song) in the film Mr. Sampat.

His first song with lata was in Main bhi ladki hoon. In the meanwhile he has sung in some films like Love in Kashmir, and dubbed films from south india.

He was first singer who got accolades for his near perfect pronunciation in all the four south Indian languages. His Tamil, Malayalam and Kannada accents are so perfect that no one can believe that his mother tongue is telugu.
