In celebration of Mohammad Rafi, the mesmerising voice that became the sound of Bollywood’s golden era of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s; the internationally renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with charismatic singer Sonu Niigaam, the voice of Indian cinema today - a legend in his own right – to perform 18 of the greatest Rafi songs of all time that have been specially arranged for the occasion for the 75 piece symphony orchestra. The tour in July 2008 will feature three of the UK’s most exclusive live performance venues; the acoustically perfect Symphony Hall Birmingham, Manchester’s legendary rock venue the Apollo Theatre, and the architecturally stunning London Coliseum, home of the English National Opera and London’s biggest stage.

I wonder if any Rafian from HF is going to the concert?

Anybody in possession of the album which has been released?

he Indian music company Saregama is launching a music CD and series of tours around Britain to commemorate the Indian singer Mohammad Rafi.

At an event at the Nehru Centre in London on Tuesday 17th June, a CD album titled ‘Rafi Resurrected’ will be unveiled by the late Mohd Rafi’s eldest grandson Rizvan Rafi.

A national tour with Indian singer Sonu Nigam will follow in July: at the Symphony Hall in Birmingham(15th July); Manchester’s Apollo Theatre (17th July) and the London Coliseum (20th July).

Sony Entertainment Television Asia will broadcast all concerts.

I am seriously thinking of going but, not sure which venue; I've been to Appollo In Manchester when Shabbir Kumar came ages ago, but didnt like the venue at all, it is a crammy little place.

I quite fancy London Coliseum, has any one been there?

But if Sony are going to air the concert then I think to my self what's the point?

I probably will go..... biggrin.gif

are you sure that Sony will broadcast?

Sos, I forgot to provide a link to my source

http://www.sonu-niigaam.com/newsflash/39-n...-across-uk.html

I have also checked out Sony Television Asia Web site, they have'nt got a TV schedule that far ahead, but I have recently watched quite a few programs and promotions about this forthcoming concerts

there was one just last night at about 23:00 hour; Rizwan RAFI also appeared on the program

So I'm guessing they will be showing this on da TV

I shall keep my eyes peeled and if there's any more on this will keep you's posted

Hi,

You can sample a few on the link below, but so far I'm not impressed at all, simply because there IS NO TABLA, just listen to the songs and you will discover a huge void, there's no chemistry at all between the vocal's and music

http://www.saregamaevents.com/album.htm

The only songs I found were ok were Suhani Raat Dhal Chuki "this is the composers Favourite", I bet Barbaad E Mahabbat KI Dua will sound awesome with the orchestra

Baharon Phool Basrao Sounds Good As well, just imagine how lovely it could have been with addition of Table

I'm not too sure about going now; I dont want to listen to Rafi Gems with Tingling Harp Music biggrin.gif

I was discussing the same today with a familymember of mine.

It sounds so empty without tabla and dholak. Its very pity that they don't use it.

Doesn't matter how the quality of the show is. I'm very happy that Rafi-saab is honoured this way by a very famous star of todays Bollywood, who just like us is a Rafian!

Rafi-saab deserves it! May many more tributes follow!

For the show: is a pity that they did't add the indian instruments, like sitar, tabla etc.

The snippets on Saregama site together with Youtube totally ruined it for me...didn't like it at all. Even Sonu's singing was bad.

I WAS at the symphony hall on tues 15th July. It was a wonderful show. The CBSO was at its professional best and Sonu Nigam sang about 18 songs back to back without any break. The Youtube recording is horribly distorted and one should not make an opinion based on those clips. Yes the lack of tabla and Dholak was on purpose to give a global appeal to the songs. However a song like " jat yamla pagla" did sound bland because of that.

Sonu nigam payed profuse tributes to rafi saab, in fact asked the audience to stand for a 30 secs silence at the beginning of the show as a mark of respect for rafi saab.

In my opinion he has only elevated the status of Rafi saab as a true international legend and I commend nigam for doing that job.
