The music of the Meena Kumari-Usha Kiron-Ashok Kumar-Dev Anand starrer, 'Baadbaan', was the creative collaboration of two past composing greats, Timir Baran and Surya Kumar Pal. Timir Baran, of course, has become immortal even by his pathbreaking 'Devdas' score, which came to us as early as in 1934 in the vibrant voice of Kundan Lal Saigal [nursing, if it were to be believed, a sore throat!], and including, amongst others, the perennial "Baalam aaye baso more man mein" and "Dukh ke ab din beetat naahi", which remain farmaished nearly 75 years after they were rendered. No less accomplished, for that matter, was Timir Baran's 'Chandidass' Saigal classic, "Tarpat beete din rain", incomprarably rendered by that singing titan. S K Pal, of course, was a composer in his own class in the '40s, with scores like the 1944 'Man Ki Jeet' remaining popular to this day. Between the two, they created memorable music for 'Baadbaan', most fondly - and justly - remembered for the Geeta-Hemant tandem, "Kaise koi jiye zehar hai zindagi", a mood number to beat all mood numbers. No less evocative was Geeta in soliloquizing "Har roz kaha har roz suna ek baat na poori ho paayi". And Asha's "Thukraake teri duniya ko", though feelingly rendered, somehow falls short of Geeta's achievement in "Kaise koi jiye" and "Har roz kaha". For all that, it remains an Asha classic to this day. Here, then, are these four 'Baadbaan' evergreens:
