Folks
I am not sure how popular this one will be.
I was listening to the song "Daiyya re daiyya" from leader. Rafi only has Alaap in it. it actually adds a huge value to the song.
similarly the song "Sajan tere pyaar mein" from Mahua and "Ruhi Ruhi Ruhi" from Shahjehan with K L Saigal.
I wonder if any of you has come across songs where Rafi has made only a minimal appearance.
I would like to collect such songs too.
Feel free to contribute.
Hope you have a nice summer...
Regards

O.P. Nayyar used to mostly always try and enlarge the role of Asha in Rafi-Asha duets, in comparison to the role of Rafi Saab.
Why, you may ask. My own answer is that OPN always very fondly wanted to popularise Asha as a singer. (Poor man, he didn't know how counterproductive it would turn out to be for himself during later days!)
Anyway, OPN thought the best way to sell Asha was to make her sing with the Colossus, Rafi, as frequently as possible, but with a longer duration for Asha. More so, since OPN knew that the simple and unassuming soul that Rafi was, he would never object to it.
One example is the Rafi-Asha duet from Film: Tum Sa Nahi Dekha, "Dekho Kasam Se, Kasam Se". In this two full antaras and more is on Asha. Rafi Saab comes in between briefly with the beautiful line, "Kya Lagaayi Tum Ne Yeh Kasam Kasam Se, Lo Thahar Gaye Ham, Kuch Kahogi Ham Se" and he steals the show.
There is another Rafi-Shamshad duet from Film :Musafirkhana(MD: again OPN). It goes thus: "Thoda Sa Dil Lagaake Dekh, Rum Pum Tararararara rarararum". In this duet, the whole lyrics are only on Shamshad Begum. Rafi Saab just keeps saying his Rumpums and Tararumpums, much like the interlude musical bits! And by this, the song has become such a beautiful one!
Some more examples later.

The first one that comes to my mind..is the beautiful composition..Main tumhi se phoochti hoon...from Black Cat. Rafi sings just a couple of lines before the main song.." Tum haseen ho tumhe sab dil mein jagah dete hain...Hum mein bhi kya baat hain...Aise jo bhi pyar karen ? "...but for me it is a duet nevertheless....and i always repent that Rafi didnt sing not even one line of that memorable composition of N.Dutta...

Rafi gave his heart out for those two lines...just listen once to the passion in his Voice ! Awsome !!

Good picks, Erum Ji and SF.
One more. There is a song in Film:Babul(Naushad), which is sung by Talat, Shamshad and Rafi.
In this, Rafi Saab has only one line all through. And that is: "nadiya mein utha hai shor chhayi hai ghata ghanaghor jaana door hai". And he says it so beautifully.

How about the mother of all late entry songs, Kya Mausam Hai from Doosra Aadmi composed by Rajesh Roshan.
Rafi saab comes in with:
Yeh mastiyan yeh bahar

He totally changes the whole song, and leaves his stamp all over the composition. No other singer could have entered the song like that.

Absolutely, Parag. Looks like I was not off the mark when I said that OPN has the maximum number of such songs!

Two more OPN songs of this type.
1."Gustaakhh Nazar, Chehre Se Hata, Ham Ko Na Sathha, Arre Jaa Chala Jaaaaaaaaaa"--Film:Jaali Note--OPN---Rafi & Asha
In this beautiful foot-tapping song, Rafi Saab has just the same half a Mukhda (not even a full one!) all through the song. And it is:"Jaati Hai Kahan, Baaten Na Banaa, Yeh Karthi Hai Kya, Laaa Haath Milaa". With this 'minimal contribution', Rafi Saab (in the form of a bearded, old Dev Anand!) scene pe chhaa Jaathe hain!
Incidentally, I remember this duet for one more reason too. It appears on the very first page (in my very first post too!) of my 'TV serial', "Some Rare Diamonds of Rafi Saab"!
2. The second OPN song I have in mind is the following Asha-Rafi duet from Film:Musafirkhana.
"Agar Baabu, Dil Hai Kaboo, Dar Nahin Tu, Mohabbat Kar".
In this, the whole song is on Asha Bhosle, but Rafi Saab keeps saying things like "Ahahhahha"!

One very old song from Film:Hamari Manzil( 1949). This is sung by four people, Rafi, Geeta, Husnlal(?) and S.D.Batish.
"Kaaten Banenge Kaliyan, Kaaton Se Khelta Ja"
Rafi Saab has just a beautiful opening line, "Andheron Se Na Dar, Taaron Ki Mehfil Dhoondhne Wale, Na Ghabhraa Raah Ke Kaanton Se, Manzil Dhoondhne Wale". In addition, he sings the Mukhda, "Kaaten Banenege Kaliyan---" just once. Afterwards, it's all Geeta, Husnlal and Batish!

Hats off, both you senior members!

One more song where Rafi just speaks just a few words , but he is so cute when he says oh ho....Hum ko chod ke kahaan jaaoge saayan tum bada pachtaoge with Geeta dutt
Pinky, isn't this from Shrimati 420?
As I do not have it, shall be grateful if someone kindly uploads it here.

Ittefaq Ji,
Both these are, I think, very apt examples.
In the Rafi-Lata duet version of "Zindagi Bhar Nahin Bhoolegi Woh Barsaat Ki Raat" from Film:Barsaat Ki Raat, Lata Ji has almost the whole song to herself. Rafi Saab makes a mesmerizing, but brief, appearence with the line, "Roothne Wali"!
Can someone please upload the extended/film version of this Rafi-Lata duet?
Venkat
Can anyone help?
Venkat
I have this in CDQ but I don't know if it's the extended version - it's 3:21 mins. Let me know if you want it and I'll upload it.

T Ji, please upload both, if you can. I fancy 03:21 must be the full version.

Oh yeah T,
Ayiyya! Dil Vil Pyaar Vyaar &
Sheeshe Ka Ho Ya Patthar Ka DilWhooo-ohhhha! I got 'em just in 1 go

! Aren't you just proud of me? I know I know you are!
T, good to see ya around! Stick around please!

For the nth time - Ladki hain ya computerva ??

I try to visit HF as much as time permits Anu, good to see you too and now for one more so that this post doesn't end up "spamming"

This time they are the concluding lines... MD Naushad
Husn se ishq kabhi door nahin reh sakta
dil agar dil hain tau majboor nahin reh saktaI'll take this opportunity to clear up one more doubt. In Ganga Jamuna's Ho re ho re jhanan ghunghar baje (by Lataji n chorus), is that Rafi saab going Ho re ho at the end... somewhere earlier it was said so and somehow the voice sounds more like Mahendra Kapoor to me, I could be totally mistaken of course, considering it's Naushad and Dilip Kumar, I need someone with better ears to confirm Rafi saab for me. Thank you.

... well then there goes my chance of improving my ratio once again
I have read complaints - that people don't upload requests. In my experience... while I work on files to upload I am almost always pre empted. I am not complaining mind, in fact its laudable that people are so helpful.
