One hearing of the eternal "Guzra hua zamana aata nahin dobara", and S.Mohinder, the genial Sardarji composer of the '40s and '50s, impresses himself forever on the music lover's psyche. However, 'Shirin Farhad' was no flash in the pan. If that Madhubala-starrer had one Lata perennial, 'Naata', another mainstream Madhubala movie, had four Lata plaintives, each excelling the other, of which I post three here. These four Lata soulfuls - "Mat samjho neer bahati hoon", "Is bewafa jahan ka dastoor hai purana", "Dekhte dekhte jal gaya aashiyaan" and "Sun sakhi ri tera jal chuka aashiyaan" (of which, unfortunately, the last is not available on my PC) - in my view, make 'Naata' one of Lata's finest achievements of all time.
