Begunah (1956)

This movie when it was released it was a runaway hit. It was a carbon copy of late great Danny Kaye's Hollywood film "A Knock On The Wood." The Hindi movie had superb music by Shankar & Jaikishan (S&J) and Kishoreda was at his zaniest.

For some reason or other, it is very difficult to get hold of songs of this movie. There are 10 songs in this film. I am uploading six of them here. Most of these were contributed by the members of this Forum. The missing songs are shown in the table below in red italics. If anyone of you have them, please share with us.

Now for a description of the songs and the songs themselves ...

One of the items that is discussed even today is Mukesh Saab singing for Kishoreda, the song "Aye Pyase Dil Bezubaan." This is not the first time S&J had someone else sing for Kishoreda. One example of this is in "Shararat" Rafi Saab lent his voice to Kishoreda.

Swarapriya, a question.

Is 'Aaja Raat Beeti Jaaye' from CD or from another source. ?
The reason I am asking is, I have a bad copy of this song and was looking for a better one, ie CD.

Thank you. smile.gif

King Saab,

No. This is not from CD. It was from a tape borrowed from a friend. Doesn't sound that awful. But don't bet on it. Your bar may be very high on standards. I am easy to please.

Swarapriya,

There were 3 or 4 Begunah movies. I think, most of the missing songs are from other Begunah movies.
The missing 'Main Pariyon Ki Chori' song is the same as 'Gori Gori Main Pariyon Ki Chori'.

Yes, there was a big court battle over this movie which this movie's producers lost. By the way, it shouldn't be surprising that I saw the movie. I am basically a movie buff and die for beautiful music. You may call me a cinemaniac too.

Swarapriya,

The song by Sahu Madhok might have come from Begunah 1937 or 1949. The other two missing songs most likely came from Usha Khanna's Begunah (1970).
Someone with Geet Kosh may please confirm.

I stuck my neck out when I said that there is a little story behind the Mukesh song picturized on Jaikishan. The story is there but I recall it only in bits and pieces. I don't even remember as to where I read it. I will provide my "bits and pieces" and may be someone else can come up with all the details and even correct any discrepencies in the story.

The song "Aye pyase dil..." was to be picturized on Jaikishan and Jaikishan was going to sing the song himself. Shanker heard the song and convinced Jaikishan that Mukesh should do the song. Shanker made the tune but changed it few times saying " This tune is not good enough for my Jai..." Shanker was finally satisfied with his tune and Mukesh play backed for Jai in the movie. I have seen the movie and this song is one of the best from Mukesh.
Sorry guy's that's all I can contribute.

AFAIK, the movie was not taken off after one week - it was a moderately successful film. The prints were destroyed some time 1959 (two years after probably when the case was won). In the meantime, the movie was being screened intermittently in various theatres here and there.
