Do Bhai (1947)

This is the movie in which the "real" Geetaji was discovered. The song "Mera Sundar Sapna Beet Gaya" took all of India by storm and overnight Geetaji became a singing sensation. She did songs earlier but never before this her talent was unearthed and groomed like in ths movie by Burman da.

This movie "Do Bhai" was made by Filmistan Studios, a big name in movie industry at that time. When Burman da informed the producers that he would like to have Geetaji sing most of the songs, they originally objected. When SD insisted, they agreed to have her record a song as an experiment before giving the go ahead nod. Burman da had Geetaji sing a song (not "Mera Sundar") and played the song for the producers. The producers were sold.

The modest movie "Do Bhai" became a huge hit thanks to some of the beautiful songs Geetaji sung in this movie. Geetaji went on to sing many more songs for Burmanda (almost 80 songs, majority of them solos) in her career. There is something about her voice that lifts your spirits into sublime and envigorates your whole spirits. She was an absolutely a phenomenal singer of her times and probably of all the times!

Even Rafi Saab gets into the act with a nice solo. The following table gives details of all the songs. The movie had nine songs of which I am uploading seven of them. The other two songs, sung by Paro, I do not have them. Details of these two songs are shown in red italics in the table. If anyone of you have them please share with us. I have also included Lataji's commentary that goes along with "Mera Sundar Sapna" as a bonus. Also, a word of caution. These songs were recorded over 61 years back, and their quality is not uniform. Please keep this in mind.

Now for the songs themselves ...

Hi Swarapriya

Many thanks for posting this album (after Dil Ki Raani, the other great SD-GD album of 1947).

The heroine of Do Bhai (1947) was Kaamini Kaushal. Not sure on whom all the songs of Geeta ji (and the other songs) were picturized. Apart from the evergreen song "Mera sundar sapna beet gaya" (which unfortunately summarizes Geeta ji's real life story), "Yaad karoge yaad karoge Ek din mujhko yaad karoge" is also a divine beauty of a song !

I am posting a pic of young Geeta ji with Lata ji and Meena Kapoor ji courtesy generous members of HF who shared all these rare pics on Geeta Dutt forum.

Best Regards
Parag
