Jaidev, The S.D. Burman Traditionalist
Jaidev Verma, popularly known as Jaidev, started his film career as an actor. But he had strong musical training and wanted to compose music. S.D. Burman gave him the opportunity to work with him as his assistant in 1951. Chetan Anand recognized the talent of Jaidev and gave him his first major break by assigning him to be a music director for his movie “Joru Ka Bhai” in 1955. Music for this movie was a success. Encouraged, Chetan Anand gave Jaidevji another opportunity for his next movie “Anjali” in 1957. The songs for this movie also became popular. But not until Dev Anand signed him to provide music for his film “Hum Dono”, Jaidev’s name, inspite of some successful movies, remained obscure. But songs of “Hum Dono” became a rage and movie was a big hit for Dev Saab and for Jaidev ji as well.
Surprisingly, inspite of string of successes he enjoyed with his movies, Jaidevji never got into the so called “big league” music director brackets. This may be partly because his music had so much influence of SD. Whereas RD blazed himself new trails even though he was also a long time assistant to SD, Jaidev ji remained close to providing Burmanesque style music. In the life span of little over 30 years in the film industry as a music director, Jaidevji composed music for some 40+ movies. During that span he won four Sur Singar Samsad awards. He also was a recepient of Lata Mangeshkar award from the Government of Madhya Pradesh. He won three National awards as the best music director for “Reshma Aur Shera (1971)”, “Gaman (1979)”, and “Ankahee (1984)”. Such an honor nobody ever received until recently A.R. Rahman was able to accomplish it.
Inspite of all the accolades and some really beautiful music created, Jaidev remained aloof and distant from the luminous filmworld and died in very poor health.
In the next few weeks I will try to capture some of the music Jaidevji created through these columns. I have some of his original album CDs and will upload from these.

Alaap (1977)
This movie was produced and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. It had the popular lead pair of Rekha and Amitabh. But like most of Hrishida's movies this was a pretty serious movie with some melodious music. Neither Rafi Saab nor Kishore da are here. It is Madhurani, Faiyyaz, Dilraj Kaur, Bhupinder, and Yesudas. It is so refreshing to listen to some unfamiliar voices. Of course Lataji is also here.
All songs are done in semiclassical mode. Harbans Rai Bachchan and Rahi Masoom Reza penned the lyrics. Here are the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Dooriyan (1979)
Here is another album where there are only four songs. There are couple of duets with Anuradha Paudwal and Bhupinderji that are just great. Anuradhaji's liltingly sweet voice complimented with sleepy voice of Bhupinderji these songs seem to be so different that one would like to listen to them over and over again. This movie paired beautiful and talented Sharmila Tagore with that great actor Uttam Kumar.
Here are the details of these four songs and the songs themselves ...

Here is another album by Jaidevji that has only few songs. There are five songs in this movie but my album had only four of them. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below. The solo by Kishoreda is a famous one, "Saathi Milte Hain." Also, Ashaji's song "Mere Dil Mein" is a nice one.

Gaman (1978)
Here is another one of those "art" movies it seems like Jaidevji contracted to provide music for. Even the singers are different. Ever heard of Hira Devi Mishra? In 1978, probably not many people heard of Hariharan either. Suresh Wadkar, popular during 70's, has a great solo in "Seene Mein Jalan."
This movie starred that late great actress Smita Patil. She showed so much promise in the few movies she appeared in. It was so unfortunate that she died that young. By the way, Nana Patekar was introduced in this movie. This movie was directed by Muzaffar Ali who also directed the original "Umrao Jaan" starring Rekha.
There are six songs in this movie but I only have five of them. Some of them were contributed by the members of this Forum. The missing song is shown in red italics in the table below. If anyone of you have, please share with us. Now details of the songs and songs themselves ...

The Genius Of Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan (1994)
'Madhushala' is a masterpiece in Hindi literature. Its beauty stems from the richness of its lyrics. Reading these verses is like having a fine glass of wine with someone you are in deeply love with. It clouds your thoughts and you can't help but completely overwhelmed by its sheer elegance and in the process lose control of yourself.
This poetry becomes even more intoxicating when it is recited by great singer like Manna Dey to the accompaniment of Jaidevji's music. Then there is resonating voice of Amitabh Bachchan echoing through the depths of these great poems.

Gharonda (1977)
Here is another so called "art" film. Gharonda boasted good story, fine acting, great music, and fetching lyrics, and tantalizingly new voice in Runa Laila. All these ingredients added up and made the movie a success. Apart from Runa Laila's voice there was Bhupinder singing some beautiful songs in his sleepy deep voice. They all fit together so nicely.
The movie was nominated for several Filmfare awards; best flm, best director, best actress, best supporting actor, best story, and best lyrics. It won Shreeram Lagoo best supporting actor award and Gulzar best lyricist for "Do Deewane Shehar Mein" song. Jaidev's excellent music even though became very popular went unnoticed during nominations.
The extended version of the song "Ek Akela Is Shehar Mein" has an injtroduction by Gulzarji. Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Here is a beautiful album from the inimitable Jaidevji. Eventhough Jaidevji has provided music for nearly 40 films, everyone seem to remember him because of this album. Laila Majnu (1976)
This movie had the music by the great Madan Mohan. However before completing it he passed away. Jaidevji stepped in and finished it. I am not sure how many songs he composed for this movie but I haven't found breakdown of who provided what. If anyone of the members has this knowledge, please share with us. Irrespective of who provided what, I am including the whole album here.
Laila Majnu was made several times in Hindi and other languages. An earlier version starred Rishi Kapoor's uncle Shammi, then an up and coming star, as Majnu. There are some super songs here tuned to some heartwarming lyrics penned by Sahir Saab.
The extended version of "Likhkar Tera Naam" is courtesy of the members.

Here is another movie Chetan Anand made. Apart from him, it starred the great Meena Kumari along with Dev Anand. It boasted several songs, 11 in total. My CD had only nine of them. I am uploading those. Missing two songs are shown in the table below in red italics. If any of the members have them, please share.
It is interesting to note that Jaidevji utilized the talents of nine different singers for these 11 songs. The title song sung by Manna Dey is his typical superb rendition that only he can do with so much ease.
Now for the details of the songs and the songs themselves ...
Here a longer version---Kinare Kinare (1963)- Teri Tasveer Bhi Tujh Jaisi (film version)
Lyrics: Bhart Vyas- Music: Jaidev
File format/bitrate/duration: MP3-VBR-192 kbps-4.11 minutes
Thanks for this upload. Is the lyricist Bharat Vyas or Nyaya Sharma?
Cheers,
Swarapriya
Sorry, the tag was wrong, the lyricist indeed is Nyaya Sharma and not Bharat Vyas and I now have corrected it.
Mohd. M.
