Meri Surat Teri Ankhen (1963)
Here is a movie with the message that even facial ugliness can be overcome by the sweetness of music. One of the great actors of our time, Ashok Kumar, portrays a man with "ugly" looks. But the beautiful part of this movie is its sweet music provided by Burman Da. Way back when providing music for Ashok Kumar's "Mashaal (1950)," this was in the beginning of Burmanda's career, SD got so frustrated with Bobmay film world that he decided to quit without completing the assignment. Budding singer of those days, Manna Dey, (the famous song from that movie by him was "Upar Gagan Vishaal") finished composing rest of the music for that movie. However, Ashok Kumar pursuaded Burmanda to change his mind and stick through it. Burmanda listened and came back to stay for good. If SD never came back to Bombay, what a loss it would have been. We would have missed so many great songs full of melody and rhythm all overflowing with his trademark sweetness imprinted on them.
This movie boasts really beautiful songs. Most of the songs are done in a semiclassical vein. Yet they are very appealing even for the uninitiated in that type of music. Song after song from this movie is a gem. The solo by Rafi Saab is a masterpiece. So are the songs sung by Mannaji. Lataji's "Tere Bin Soone" is another beautiful song. Mukeshji makes a rare appearance with Sumanji in a duet for SD. Shailendra penned all the lyrics. The assistant music director was R.D. Burman.
Now for details of the songs and songs themselves ...

I forgot to mention, Manna Dey "Pooche Na Kaise" was a mega-hit and is still regarded as one of Manna's best!

Possibly everyone knows that this song "Pooche Na Kaise" has the same tune with Bengali song (Nazrulgeeti) "Arun Kanti Ke Go" based on Raga Ahir Bhairon. -Sita.

Based on what I remember about this movie :
The character played by Dadamuni is kind of dumped by his own mother as he is dark complexioned.
All his life he has been waiting to see affection and love in his mother's eyes (That is what the title is
about). Finally through his pure heart and good deads he wins his mother's heart.
Of course the music plays a very important role in the film and Burmanda has used as many as 7
playback singers to give one of his best albums.
Once again a big bunch of thanks and warmest regards to Swarapriya for sharing this excellent album.
Cheers
