Bandini (1963)

This is another Bimal Roy classic. Nutan, who did not act since 1959 (her last film was "Sujata" for Bimal Roy) came back to play the role of the title. She took leave from acting to give birth to a child (Mohnish, her son, also is an actor). What a comeback! She was absolutely magnificent. For her 3+ years away from acting, she didn't miss a beat. No wonder many critics called her acting so natural.

Nutan went on to win her third Filmfare award for this movie. (In her career that was cut short by cancer she had five best actress and one best support actress awards.)

Dharmendra was still not a recognizable actor at this time yet. He gave such a restrained performance in this movie that people took notice of him. (He gave a similar performance later in Hrishikesh Mukherjee's "Anupama." By the way, Hrishikesh Mukherjee worked with Bimal Roy on many films as an editor before turning himself to be a director.)

Bimal Roy once again took honors for best director. In a span of 10 magnificent years, this was the seventh time he was recognized with such an honor! The movie itself took several other awards including best picture, best cinematography, best story, and best sound.

All the songs of this movie just overflow with sweetness. Both solos by Asha and Lata are beautifully composed and sung. Mukesh, the number of times he sang for SD one can count on fingers, had a beautiful solo, "O Jaanewale." Burman with his inimitable voice contributes yet anoter beauty in "Ore Manjhi." Gulzar was introduced in this movie. He wrote only one song that was sung by Lata, "Mora Gora Rang Laile." A beautiful piece. Rest of the songs were all written by Shailendra.

Now for the details of the songs and songs themselves ...

Thanks for posting the album along with the information. I have read some where that Bimalda was of firm opinion that only Nutan ji can do justice to this role and the movie was launched only when she promised to make a comeback.

What a performance and what a direction ! Gone are the days..

Parag ji,

This information adds more credence to what I summarized in my description od the movie also. I share with your feelings about the movies that were made with so much care and love. Otherwise why we would be talking about them after nearly 50 or so years?

Thanks for your note.

Absolutely true !

Directors like Mehboob khan, Guru Dutt, V Shantaram, Bimal Roy, Hrishikesh Mukherjee, Chetan Anand,
Raj Kapoor, Raj Khosla, Vijay Anand created magic on the silver screen.
Most of them had a great musical ear and made sure that their films had melodious music and films touching various aspects of human lives.

Composers like S D Burman, Shanker Jaikishen, Naushad, O P Nayyar, Madan Mohan, Salil Chaudhary, Hemant Kumar, Anil Biswas, Khayyam among many others gave us lifetime treasures of immortal melodies.

We all are so grateful to these meastros of Hindi Film industry of the golden era.
