Earth Music lists a 2nd version as Geeta Dutt solo. UltraIndia lists it as a Rafi-Geeta duet. It seems Geet Kosh also lists it as Rafi-Geeta duet. As you said, some experts will have to confirm the existence of the second version.

My apologies for the intrusion, but as you mention that you could write an essay regarding the song....my thinking is that you should write the essay.

While drawing a parallel to literature, it is universally accepted that literature is not just about writings of authors but also about the critical and in-depth analysis. Just as the famous literary works are analysed and interpreted...I am sure there is an immense breadth and depth in the lyrics and compositions of the 'golden age' hindi songs.

Not just one person but all the members of this forum are among the best suited to critically analyse and interpret the various songs.

For starters another song that could be analysed and critically interpreted is one, sung by the immortal and great Md. Rafi ji...containing the words
"Umr ke chadao ka...
Utaar dekhte rahen..."

Please do write the essay and post it on Hamaraforums..perhaps with enough participation (if the administration feels it is beneficial) a section can be devoted to critical analysis. Over the years as a member (my present membership is a re-joining) I have gained the impression that this forum certainly encourages members to spread the art and the life and passion that lies in every song...

Please do write the essay and let us all contribute to make those essays (hopefully over time peer reviewed) a compilation, so that every artist understands the depth of these works

Though this song can not/should not be compared with the more famous song "Na yeh chaand hogaa" from Shart (1954) composed by Hemantda, listening to this song gave me similar deja-vu feelings. The composer and the lyricist for this song are again Hemantda and Shamshul Huda Bihari respectively (the same as in the song from Shart). The feelings and expressions are deep and this is another striking example of that special magical "Geeta Dutt touch". Another point to note that neither Shart nor Kitna Badal Gaya Insaan are films made by Guru Dutt, they are not even big budget films for that matter.
